Just been on phone to cancel my car insurance as i've sold my car but was told they have to send out a letter to cancel it. Is this right? seems weird that they wouldn't do it over the phone and it's due to be paid again on the 1st so are they taking the **** trying to get a extra payment out of me do you think? going to be least wednesday / thursday next week before i even see the letter

Sounds like total rubbish, they may send one just to confirm but it should be cancelled as soon as you've spoken to them.

Took the direct debit off anyways so they cannot get any money. Will have to wait till i get the letter see what it says on it

Who is this? Blatantly not a large insurer. I bet its a broker.

They should accept emails as a written request. Check their website.

privilege insurance and i rang them so actually spoke to some one but it's the first time i've had to cancel insurance due to sold my car

Be carefull with cancelling DD, they may see this as an opportunity to cease the insurance policy from their side.

Yuo'd then have to declare this in any further insurance quotes

At the very least get the renewal cancelled over the phone. That shouldn't require a formal letter.

For the sake of 3 days you might as well get an extra year of no claims.

edit:

I probably misunderstood. It's not a renewal but a monthly payment.

Cancellations under monthly payments is more complicated. If you have a made a claim this year, then the entire amount for the year is due at cancellation. Alternatively if you haven't made a claim then there will be a cancellation fee which needs to be paid.

I'll ring them again before payment is due on the first.

yeah mate made no claims so should just be a admin fee to pay which i thought would have been done over the phone there and then not needing to send a letter through post

Had my letter through yesterday so thought would let ya know :p

Basically it confirmed its been cancelled along with copy of my no proof for 2 years but no mention anywhere of a fee for cancelling which i am happy about

Were you paying in 12 monthly payments or less than that?

If it is less than that, on a pro-rata basis you probably were in "credit".

Sounds like crossed wires to me, you can cancel the policy over the phone and they will send out a confirmation letter.

I don't see the issue?
