Hi guys,

Looking for some car suggestions if possible. I'm not that knowledgable so any help will be greatly appreciated.

My requirements are:

  • £10K budget (doesn't have to be exact but within about £1K either side I think).
  • Fast.
  • Low mileage.
  • 10 plate or newer.
  • Good technology - Bluetooth, Air Con, Parking sensors etc...
Would also like a high fuel efficiency, maybe around 50mpg. Happy to sacrifice some power if this is possible?

Cheers :)

What do you consider fast and low mileage?

50mpg.. why?

I was hoping you guys would be able to find something to fit.

Fast maybe 150bhp+ (I'm coming from a slow car). The figure for low mileage would depend on the age of the car.

50mpg was a ballpark figure, it doesn't have to be that. Something more than 30mpg would be nice and I cannot see it being anymore than 70mpg.

I would rather not put definitive figures as I'm trying to find a car that fits most of my requirements. Hopefully what I've given is enough?

Thanks :)

Any specific size/type requirements?

Saloon/hatchback/estate etc.

Fwd, rwd or awd?

Something like your common or garden 320d would fit the bill.

Power is subjective, 150bhp in an mx5 is going to feel a lot faster than in a discovery.

Thanks, that looks to fit the bill. Not quite sure on whether or not Ford's are for me though. Will have a look at some others that are similar. :)

Saloon or Hatchback. I'm not really transporting anyone or anything particularly.

No idea on what's best out of FWD/RWD and AWD.

I have been looking at 320d's but not sure if diesel is the way to go or if there are any other alternatives?

Agreed on the point about power, I just want to be able to overtake with ease and beat most other cars on the road for acceleration.

Thanks :)

You're all over the place really.

You want something fast, but you want 50 mpg, and you also not sure about a diesel.

None of them really go hand in hand. You can get 50mpg out a petrol, but you'll be looking at 1L Corsas and Fiestas. They wont be fast.

You can get a decently quick petrol, as suggested above, a Golf GTI or Edition 30, but they wont give you 50 mpg average, more likely 30 mpg.

You can get a diesel that'll give you near to 50 mpg, like a 320d, and it'll be fast enough for you, I think, as it'll likely be over 150 BHP. But you'll probably struggle with your arbitrary mileage and age requirements here to get a good one in budget. And then it won't likely have ALL the bells and whistles, but could potentially have reasonable enough spec if you're willing to wait.

Unless you are doing big miles, that would make 50mpg a much preferred requirement, I'd be tempted to something more like that Fiesta ST above, or a Golf GTI or something along those lines. If you are doing reasonable mileage (10k+ per year), then perhaps look at something more diesel oriented. Should be able to pick up a decent mk4.5 Mondeo Titanium X Sport with one of the faster diesel engines for that money.

High mpg, fast cars only came in to being a few years ago. The Fiesta ST was probably the first to really crack 40+ mpg and 200hp from a petrol. It is the only real option for 10k at the moment, luckily it's also the best option :)

Depends what your used to though, if you normally drive comfy barges the Fiesta ST will feel like it has no suspension and the interior is light weight and minimal.

depends, if your only doing good roads in an area where snow isn't a major factor then rwd can be nice. but if you're in the country in an area that snows bad in winter then maybe not.

fwd will be easier on tyres as you'll only really wear down the fronts, very practical (hence why most cars are fwd), a good all rounder.

awd is bad for fuel economy and tyres, but for any rough roads in winter it'll be helpful.

diesel vs petrol is tricky, as others have said it'll be hard to find a fast petrol that'll do good mpg, the current availability leans heavily towards diesels, look up the 0-60 figures for a 320d versus a 325i will be a good comparison.

i'd advise against diesel unless you're regularly doing big miles, the way i'd describe it is a petrol would be ~30mpg everywhere wheras a diesel is 20mpg in towns and 60mpg on motorways.

You'll easily find an f10 520d within your requirements, all bar mileage that is, a work mate has just picked up a 61 plate 520d efficient dynamics, leather, I drive, parking sensors etc 1 owner from new, 128k miles, £8900 from a local dealer, he was thinking of buying lower mileage for more money but decided to keep the difference in a savings account for if / when something breaks.

Lovely motor, 184bhp iirc, not the slug you'd maybe expect it to be, it oozes quality too, lot of car for the money....
