Can a cisgendered actor play a trans character?

Ah yes, straight men. The demographic most lacking in representation...

That's irrelevant, if people want equality then they can't expect special treatment just because they're a minority.

OCuk on a black actor possibly playing James Bond: James Bond is white! A black actor can't play James Bond!:mad::mad:

Idris Elba would make a great Bond imo.

.

I get where you're coming from but the true analogy should be more like A black actor whiting up to play James Bond because he's a white character surely.

From skimming the thread in this case a man is playing a trans as a trans not changing the character to suit the actor.

Any how the World has become a very strange place. I genuinely blame the internet. When I grew up there were "strange" people but they were isolated so social norms limited their strangeness. The internet now means that any flavour of whackyness can find a "soul mate" somewhere to encourage them further into their strangeness. Hence we have people who seemingly believe they were born to the wrong race or even species and self identify way out there. That is not healthy for the individual or society.
The past plainly wasn't ok with people repressed by society but the present is worse with people encouraged to take life changing and potentially life ruining actions because the only people they listen to are providing unhealthy feedback. Also to be clear I don't hanker for the past but it is more a acceptance that not all progress is positive.

I know quite a few trans people, so I might be biased here but still.

I'd say 90% of them I know are perfectly fine, don't rub it in your face or want to go by the various of pronouns that are out there, you do get the odd few people stepping away from this though.

I think the same is with homosexual people, it always makes me cringe when someone goes from quiet and normal to sudden flamboyancy and stereo-typically gay almost overnight.

Anyway, on topic. I don't see a reason with anyone playing a trans charactor. Did anyone care that Benedict Cumberbatch played a gay Alan Turing? All I remember about that was high praise for the acting.

I hav to chuckle how everyone keeps saying why can't they just say straight, well that would be wrong as well as the actor is Gay!

Ignoring the specific issue in the OP, as most in the thread have done anyway, why do people care so much about how others like to define themselves in gender or sexual terms?

I can understand why people of minority gender or sexual identity would wish to have their identity recognised as being 'normal' and acceptable. But I can't understand why others would get so exercised by it.

What's wrong with that then? If trans females want to be considered legally males then where's the issue with a biological male playing a trans character? Probably easier on the makeup and costume department!

I think you're getting a little bit mixed up. Trans females want to be considered legally female.

As I said, trans people are upset because the casting of cis men as trans women perpetuates the myth than trans women are just men in dresses. That's dangerous at a time when conservatives in America are trying to restrict the rights of trans people. If this was a one-off then I doubt many trans people would care but the majority of trans roles are being given to cis actors.

The second someone uses the term "cisgender" they are immediately put in my mental rubbish bin. It's an instant flag telling me that I'm dealing with a complete moron who has no purpose in life other than to be politically correct about stuff that really shouldn't be an issue.

I think it is more of an equal opportunities thing.

Fact of the matter is that there are far more talented male actors than there are talented trans actors that can suit the role. This is simply because of numerical proportions. The actor they thought could adequately fill the role physically and that would be suited best in terms of talent was picked. It would have been silly to go for a trans person for the sake of it if it meant having to pick from a much smaller pool of talent and ignore better actors.

this.

i'm getting pretty sick of people who think their feelings are so much more important than everybody else and try to impose it on the world in social media BS.

We live in a world where everyone thinks others care for their opinions, while no one really cares for the opinions of others. This creates a groups of people deaf to everyone who does not sing the same tunes as them.

So under the new posting rules I'm guessing this thread is going to lead to a lot of suspensions and deleted posts.

or is trans getting lumped in with "mental health" as the acceptable forum punching bag, while things like religion get protection?

Is that a fact? How do we know until trans actors are cast in roles? If Orange Is The New Black can find a suitable trans actor, why can't the makers of this film? Surely someone who is trans has a better chance of successfully portraying a trans character?

These are the same excuses that have been used when passing over on black actors.
