Hello all,

I think the title says it all really. I would like to buy a copy of Ms office for my mum, she doesn't need the latest 365 version that PC world are desperately trying to flog to her. Can I buy a version that's a year or two out of date from somewhere nice a cheap?

Thanks,
Mike

Through the retail channel, almost certainly no.
Microsoft quickly remove from sale old versions as they don't want old versions sold - and when the price of Office rarely changes, the incoming version usually sells for the same as the outgoing one.
Second hand is your only real choice. Go super cheap and you'll get OEM - almost completely against the license terms & conditions for it to be sold on, but chances are it will work - you pays your money, you takes your chances.
Second-hand retail packages are a better bet as they can be sold on - of course you cannot check it has been removed from the previous computer first.

Cheapest you'll get a brand new copy of Office (outright purchase as opposed to subscription, minus Outlook) is around £105.

Office 365 personal can be bought for ~ £25 (on the bay) a year which includes other stuff she probably wont use 1tb onedrive etc but I think its a good deal.

Office personal is a 1 user, 1 year product. With a retail price of £50.
So anybody offering you the "same" package for half the price and telling you it doesn't expire after a year is not selling you genuine software (I know not all claim it lasts pas the year, but I'm sorry - 50% saving by buying from Ebay, the license will almost certainly not be a genuine EU one).

The OP gave the impression he wants genuine. If he doesn't want to go that route, then the cheapest option for MS Office would be free.

It is genuine and he said it only last a year, anyone who pays full price isn't shopping around.

Cheapest option is the Home Use Program which gives you a genuine perpetual licence for £10. However you need to work for a company that subscribes to this scheme. Worth checking though.

I agree with this, I got a full copy of Office Professional 2010 through the Home Use Programme for £10 as my employer was signed up.

I dont know how many private companies are signed up for it but I think pretty much everyone in local government / civil service qualifies if they have a gov.uk email address.

If you dont qualify for the Home Use Programme yourself, Its worth looking into if you have a friend / relative that has a qualifying email address and has no interest in owning a copy of Office :)

Libre Office is all you need for casual home use.

Only thing to remember is to 'save as' and choose a MS file type when creating new documents otherwise it will default to a Open Document standard.

Why bother with MS Office when there are plenty of alternatives?

Libre Office is pretty much exactly the same as MS Office but its free.
