Personally, I'd pick a 970 over a 480.
I just prefer nvidia cards. Amd cards always feel a little cheap to me.

You mean cheap like selling a card as having 4GB of VRAM, but one closer inspection only has 3.5GB of VRAM, and then having to refund users in the US after a class action lawsuit?
The single best option is going second hand. If you can get a 980ti then that will see you out for years to come.
For new, it has to be the RX480. My personal preference would be to save £50 and go for the 4GB option, especially if you are on 1080p. But i know that there are valid concerns that in future that level of memory will be a handicap for most games.

This is just personal preference. The build quality of the boards and heatsinks just always seems flimsy on amd cards to me.
Nvidia is my personal preference. The build quality on my evga 780 is outstanding.
I always feel nvidia cards are smoother and more consistent in frame rate too. Although I have to say I haven't actually used a 480 so can't comment on this specific card.

I should have perhaps mentioned that I currently have an Asus R9 280x AMD card but I think it has a fault as I get a lot of 'artefacting' in games.

If I was buying a brand new card for around £200, I'd still be going for a 970 myself.
But, ideally I'd be waiting for a good deal on a used 980ti. Much faster card.
Of course, if you can possibly add another £100, then the lower end 1070's come into range.

i would go for the rx480 8gb just means you have the extra memory to toy about with also the rx480 is full VR Ready if you going to be into that as well at the £250 mark i think thatwould be the best to go for

Having previously owned one, I would argue against that. Mine thermal throttled easily and the fan got very loud. I would definitely recommend spending £9.99 more and getting:

A great cooler from what I've read (better than Sapphire Nitro), from a reputable company and with a nice overclock. Also comes with a backplate and is reduced in price (£249.99 from £265.99). Probably the very best card you can get for under £250.

Hell no Nvidia is great for the latest generation however the 970 is going to have a fun time next year with no support for it in new games while the 480 will likely increase in performance...
Get a 480 or if you want Nvidia i would only recommend a 1070 due to support and price to performance.

Price to performance? the 1060 outperforms the 480 basically all the time for the same price?

The full-fat 1060 costs more (and is only faster situationally), the cut-down 1060 is slower. A 4GB 480 beats a 970 for the same money and no full-fat 1060 matches that on price.
I'm not saying the 480 is better than the 1060 either, I think they're quite comparable, just contesting your statements as others might take them as fact rather than situational.
