Car Suggestions - Around £10K

Thanks guys for the responses.

I think I've decided on manual and I'm not really wanting Ford.

That 328i is nice but it's an automatic :(

Cheers..

I'd recommend driving both an auto and manual 3 series of that generation before dismissing if I were you.

I prefer a manual car in general, but the box just works

That's a fair point, I just haven't driven auto before and I've always thought that you won't get the same driving experience with an automatic.

Golf GTI.

I can see this coming down to either a Golf GTI or a BMW 1/3 series!

That was exactly what I was thinking. I suspect the answer is none.

I actually can't think of a real hot hatch that would do a genuine 50 mpg. Short of coasting downhill with a tail wind. Heck, I am yet to drive a relatively modern 2l tdi that will average a genuine 50 mpg with my driving style (which isn't too shabby having averaged 40 mpg in the 530d over 45k).

Don't discount Ford totally, I recently got a Mondeo Titanium X Sport, it is a genuinely nice car with really good interior and fantastic level of kit, sure a high spec BMW or Audi would be nicer but they would also cost a lot more.

People get very funny with MPG claims and love to exaggerate. I could, if the weather conditions were just right and the traffic calm, get 40mpg out of my 530i. It was however nothing like a '40mpg car' and I never once managed to actually average that across an entire tank!

Indeed. Even if you could get 50mpg out of a reasonably powerful, petrol hatch over more than a few miles you'd constantly be trying to be extremely economical.....at which point why did you even buy that car?

Yeah. Of course. When I quote an mpg figure for a car, it's generally over at least several thousand miles. Not over a motorway trip done entirely at 65 mph.

So my S4 was 23 mpg over 8k, a3 2.0 tdi 46 over 60k. Golf gti's (1.8t) 30 mpg over 30k, 330i 26 mpg over 6k etc...

It is worth noting though, likes of the a3 I was around a decade younger, it was remapped, and was driven accordingly. Same with all motors really. Driven in a manner in line with their intended use.

Which £10k petrol hot hatch does 50mpg?

Sorry, are we talking about combined figures? I was assuming OP wants a car capable of 50MPG on a run rather than one which will do it all the time. Whenever I look up MPG I am usually looking for what it can do if it needs to rather than a combined figure, but that's probably because I'm a heavy motorway user at the moment. My mistake!

And the Octavia was not a taxi but yes it is 90HP. What I was getting at was that its heavier than a Fabia TDI and still gets far more than 20MPG in town.

Id imagine almost all of them Fox... If you know how to drive them properly. That ST180 for example should be easily capable of 50MPG on a run if driven right. Hell, I almost got 50MPG out of both my 2ZZ Toyotas, and they are not known for their economy! Things must have moved on since 2001 in terms of efficiency from a 200~HP engine!

The 90 bhp is relevant because it is more efficient that the 115 or 130 varieties. And obviously more efficient than any petrol hot hatch...

But even on a run figures, I doubt there will be many true hot hatches thay break a true 50 mpg with this use profile. And even less at £10k.

You're not being serious, surely?

Who buys a £10k petrol hot hatch to drive in maximum economy mode?
People who want a quick car but want it to be fairly economical for commuting purposes.

Someone claimed 20MPG around town from a diesel Fabia, I was calling them out on it being BS. I wasn't trying to compare my car to a petrol hot hatch. :p

So are you telling me that a Golf GTI 2.0TSI or a Focus ST 250 wont get 50MPG on a good motorway run at 65~ MPH with smooth throttle inputs? If so then that kinda sucks. I thought things had moved on more than that. I obviously don't expect any will get close to that figure if you stick the cruise control to 80 and sit back. :p
