I'm just after some eBay advice. I listed a catalytic convertor and exhaust on ebay, the advert was marked collection only. I also stated cash on collection only payment method.

The situation is an exhaust dealer has purchased it, then has sent me payment by paypal.

He did send me a message on Thursday night asking where I was based in, I responded with postcode and no more message from him.

I'm aware that taking paypal for an item and they collect is really dodgy. I've just been reading and apparently I should refund the payment.

What are peoples views on this. My 6th sense is telling me the person buying is about to scam me, warning sign was he paypaled for something marked as collect and no more response from him.

Many thanks
Jason

Trust your instincts - refund the PayPal payment.

Worst that can happen is you'll lose/be down on the eBay fees if the buyer decides not to go through with the purchase and doesn't agree to the sale being cancelled.

I've sold a few items where the buyer has paid using Paypal and then collected without any issue.

If you decide to refund the buyer and he does not accept it then you will have to wait for your final value fee's to be refunded by ebay.

I would contact Paypal direct if you are un-sure just to see where you stand in-case he was to lodge a non-receipt of item claim but then as you have stated, it is collection only so you would not have any evidence to provide Paypal that it was posted and signed for so I am guessing in the event of a claim a signed copy of the Paypal invoice would suffice.

An "exhaust dealer"??? I have been in the motor trade for years, and I would call someone who claimed to specialise in buying used cats as a scrap metal dealer if I was being polite and PC... I would refund ;)

same.

i think as long as the listing states collection only they cannot claim goods not received? i think it only gets sketchy when the listing was to post the item and the buyer wants to collect instead.

Thanks for everyone's response. Still no contact from buyer, again my 6th sense tells me something is wrong.

What is the worst that would happen if I refund the buyer?

Is it ok to post the eBay advert, not sure it it's allowed on overclockers?

Im the same ive been in the motor trade for years and have never heard of an "exhaust dealer"

as you say.. sounds like a scrap metal dealer..

He says he's scrap metal and catalytic converter dealer in his description.

I know there can be good money in certain catalytic converters even scrap ones.
I normally phone my local scrap metal merchant to find out.
the one I removed from my wife's old mk4 golf was worth £130 that was a nice surprise.. but then ive had others that were only worth £20.

as for scrap metal.. the price is rock bottom the now. we stripped a car for spares a few weeks back and normally I could get the local scrap merchant to pick it up and give us some cash.. he said the price in metal is that bad that he didint even want it for free!!
