Keith Vaz is to stand aside as Chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee following allegations in a Sunday newspaper.
Select Committee member Naz Shah, who has spoken to Keith Vaz, has told Sky News that "he has done the right thing" by standing aside as chair.
Mr*Vaz has not resigned completely but temporarily as he speaks to his lawyer and other members of the committee.
The married Labour MP allegedly paid for sex with two male prostitutes and offered to pay for a class A drug, according to the Sunday Mirror.
In a statement to Sky News he said:*"It is deeply disturbing that a national newspaper should have paid individuals to have acted in this way.
"I have referred these allegations to my solicitor Mark Stephens of Howard Kennedy who will consider them carefully and advise me accordingly."
In a previous*statement, issued to the Mail on Sunday, Mr*Vaz said:*"I am genuinely sorry for the hurt and distress that has been caused by my actions, in particular to my wife and children.
"I will be informing the Committee on Tuesday of my intention to stand aside from chairing the sessions of the Committee with immediate effect."
Mr*Vaz has been the Labour MP for Leicester since 1987 and chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee for 10 years.
In July, the Home Affairs Select Committee issued a report saying that*soliciting by sex workers should be decriminalised.**
A Labour Party Spokesperson said: "Keith Vaz has issued a statement on this matter.*
"As with all departmental select committees, Keith was elected to the chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee by the House of Commons, and his position is a matter for him and the House."
Former culture secretary John Whittingdale said that Keith Vaz's reported*resignation seemed "sensible".
"I haven't read the whole of the allegations and therefore it's difficult to*comment on them," he told Sky News's Murnaghan programme.
"But Keith Vaz as I understand it ... he will stand aside from the*chairmanship of the select committee.
"Given the areas of which the committee is responsible, that does seem to me*to be a sensible course of action. I wouldn't want to comment beyond that."

Love the dig at the press.
Yes Keith, it is the presses fault you got caught with prostitutes.
Go home and apologise to your family.
Always found him a bit of a smarmy chap, wouldn't have realised that this was his kink though.

What is it with politicians in this country and banging rent boys?!
Am I missing out on something?

Not sure, but I recall when they last had a labour leadership election, Chukka stepped aside when the revelations of the times he spent in the very exclusive and very expensive bar came to light. Some private members club with bottles at incredibly high prices.

The labour chaps seem to have publically developed all the kinks one would have associated with the conservatives through the 80s.

He is one of the most pompous asses in politics and yet again we have evidence of the corrupt standards applied by the ruling elite. Owned I think is modern parlance.

Only a sore anus.

I don't see what the fuss is, I thought banging rent boys and hookers was pretty much a compulsory activity for MPs.

Power corrupts. It always has done, and always will corrupt.

I see Mr Vaz has rushed off to his legal team straight away, the elite can afford the best legal advice and will use the law to protect their lifestyles.

Politics in Britain is a dirty, cesspit of self-interest, self-promotion and egotism.

I would far rather the Police investigated and prosecuted currently active perverts in high places rather than dead ones who may (or may not) have done stuff 40 years ago!

I did find it amusing that he said

1. Damn the press for being so naughty (how rude they would publish such truths)
2. I have handed this to my lawyer to see if the press have done anything they shouldn't have (as clearly Keith hasn't) ;)
and then
3. Sorry to family...

Nice order Keith.

Mr Vaz has a chequered political history, the Filkin inquiry, the Hinduja affair and suspension from the House of Commons. His fellow MP Patrick Mercer once referred to him as a 'crook of the first order'

Tbh the only problem i can see is that it opens them up for blackmail if somone finds out.

As long as the relevant civil service is informed and there is no sensitive material accessible then anyone should be able to bang all the hookers they want

Perhaps, but in its current stance isn't it illegal? Pretty sure politicians of all people should be obeying the law!

I wonder if this has anything to do with the Abuse Inquiry?

/tin foil on - Perhaps Vaz is the one who told the previous person to quit or made it very difficult for them to do their job, thus the media got involved and threw his career in the bin. /tin foil off

Why does it matter ?

If he was using his own money to party on then I fail to see if enjoys the **** has anything to do with running the country. Aside from breaking some archaic laws about prostitution.

That being said he is a smarmy git and hope he gets the book thrown at him. Purely down on smarmyness.

p.s

Good job I not a MP, due to be so easily corrupted.
