Alternate to masking tape when painting

Any old masking tape is fine. Just don't stick it to freshly painted paint and expect it not to remove any.

decent brush and a steady hand are your best bet but if you must use tape get low tack and peel it off as you go don't wait for your paint to dry.

I've been using Frog Tape for about 10 years with no problems. In fact, I've just finished decorating our bedroom using it for the skirting board and ceiling edges.

The blue 3M tape is fantastic stuff for both hardwood, tiled or carpeted floors. Just linked product above, there are cheaper suppliers about, particularly car detailing sites.

Frog tape is not that great IMO, as is regular masking tape (nothing has induced more rage in my life than trying to pick at the 1000th ripped piece on a roll).

3M stuff isn't cheap but honestly it does the job perfectly. I've left it a good month on both carpet, tiles and UPVC door frames with no residue or issues. Suggest if you do use it and have paint on it though that you peel it off the following day as it can peel the paint off (same issue with any tape).

been doing all the walls, ceilings and gloss on our new place and i pretty much only tape up the carpet now - even frog tape can be a right royal pain on an old house - just freehand it :)

Steady hand and patience is my best advice, And a decent quality brush too of course. The only parts of a room i mask are the skirting, window sills and fireplace if it's present. In new houses, best way is to do the ceiling first but come down onto the wall a bit, this leaves an easier surface to cut in with your wall colour as opposed to bare plaster.

I have twice used the low tack Frogtape on fresh plaster, both times ripped the paint off on removal.

The second time I left the paint a week to dry still ripped it off.

I then touched that up thought and it looked great, so worth it in the end I guess.

I'm really struggling to see why anyone would use masking tape for doing a skirting board edge it's so easy freehand and takes half the time!

Another vote for frogtape here (yellow), used it on 2 rooms so far and it's always left razor sharp lines with no peeling - just make sure you follow the instructions ;)

I have been putting off doing some skirting boards as we had engineered oak fitted and new skirting over - would frog tape or the blue 3m be good for putting on the flooring?

Yeah frog tape would be fine. (and a cloth incase the paint comes thru maybe!)
