Looking for something new to me as I'm getting bored with my Leon Cupra 180 and there's a bit of work coming up so thinking about a change.

Something with a bit of poke, absolutely must have five seats but three doors is fine and ideally close to 40 MPG on a long run as while I don't do enough to justify a diesel I do a 60 mile round trip twice a weekend. Work is a five minute drive away. I've discounted a focus ST 5Cyl as 30mpg doesn't appeal, however nice the noise.

Obviously Golf GTI is an option but I'm struggling to think of anything else. Mazda 3 MPS? Some sort of BMW Saloon? 330i? Renaultsport Megane? Needs to be at least a Hatch as my teenagers are in it every weekend. Thoughts?

Could stretch to £6k for the right car as well.

Thought the Mazda MPS's were meant to be completely terrible on the fuel? With the 6's AWD making it even worse.

330i will struggle to do 40mpg on a run. Unless it is a LONG dual carriageway / motorway run, and you are very sensible.

Golf GTI is where my money would go. Maybe Octavia VRS 2.0T could fall into budget too. I picked up my Edition 30 for not much more than what you say you would stretch to for the right car, so they could be a shout. And they remap VERY well, if your into that sort of thing.

Whoops you're right, I just looked up the MPG figures for it, ignore me :D

Mccarf will disagree but Octavia VRS if you want something hot hatchy

Saab 9-3 aero if you aren't bothered about handling and like good value for money

Neither make a terribly nice noise but very few 4 pots do and for the mpg requirement you really need to be looking at turbo 4s, as soon as you get into 5 or 6 cylinders the mpg plummets.

£3-5k is such a low budget for this criteria...

I wouldn't want a £4k Golf GTI...I think you need to up the budget, how about a A3 2.0 TFSI or 3.2 litre?

Do these have the hard ride of the previous model? There are a lot of speed bumps I navigate regularly.
No idea on this myself..

But most hot hatches will have a hard ride
(Even my 2016 focus ST the ride in it is pretty hard and the latest fiesta ST meant to be a fair bit harder/harsher  then what my focus is )

They aren't very comfy but probably the best handling thing you'll buy for the money (hatch wise) - pretty tolerable for shortish usage though

The Octavia mentioned elsewhere is much comfier, but handles very poorly by comparison (probably the "worst" handling of the suggestions )
