Car suggestions, £3k-£5k, bit of poke

Mondeo ST220 or Mondeo Mk4 2.5 Titanium X.
No hot hatch for your budget is going to get anywhere near 40mpg you will be lucky to see 30mpg in anything mentioned above.
My Focus ST has never seen over 25mpg in the year I've owned it despite being 70% motorway driving lol.

Dude that Volvo 5-pot is one of the thirstiest engines known to man!

You even say that your ST has never got above 25MPG so why recommend :p

Octavia seems like a good choice given OP wants pace and space.

Personally can't see how a golf or Octavia is going to be realistically any quicker or less boring than the ops current Leon Cupra.

Not sure what the answer necessarily is - but don't think buying a nearly identical VAG product is it.

Is the upcoming work expensive on your cupra? If it's only a few hundred, you could just get the work done then get it remapped to cure your boredom.

Plus the op would know everything that is wrong/broke on his car

Where a new second hand car could have anything wrong with it..
(Remember many years ago in the late 80's or early 90's when I bought what looked like a perfect mark 1 Ford fiesta 1.6 sport and it used to wear a set of brand new front tyres out about every month, I found out that the chassis had been knocked and twisted some how before I bought it)

If yer wanting to up the performance yer gonna have to drop something :p

In my 6mps Im averaging 21l/100m I think is just under 22mpg, yes its been higher on runs but Im not one for trying to delude myself that I get awesome MPG in what may be considered a hot hatch/saloon.

The 3's do far far better, I guess it's because of the extra weight and the loss thru the AWD on the 6, think yer looking mid 30/high 30s

The 3's are a rather enjoyable and tbh seem to be dropping in price, 6k would see you in a well sorted Mk1, possibly a stock Mk2, which are pretty nice inside imho, far prefer the seats to the one in my 6 too.

Theyre hungry on fuel and a one plated after early 06 and yer looking at 510ish a year on tax alone :( Or the Mk2's are int he same lower band as the earyl 06 ones, 260 a year I think.

The =civics linked above my mate has a 2.2 CtDI Type S, the stock suspension is bone shatteringly harsh :( He's just had the springs changed for Eibachs and whilst a bit better its still a bit harsh imho

Those Octy VRS's above look nice and I'd happily have a try in one tbh.
I've always like the old shape astra's why not go something at the cheaper end and mod it a bit?

As above, a remap on most diseasels sees good returns too, had a think about that?

Buy a low mileage RX8 for 2k and put the other 3k in a bank account saved just to cover the extra fuel costs ...:D

Lease a car?

Upfront payment along with the mileage I do make it unappealing and likely expensive. Plus I'll have nothing at the end of it which I don't like the idea of. I've outright owned every car I've had for the past ten years. This will be the first Finance/Loan I've had since I bought a 51 plate Fiat Multipla brand new

I've had it for nearly four years and just feel it's time to move on

Am I missing something as I no have teenage children

But why is a hatch back needed if you have teenagers ?

I guess a hatchback isn't a necessity but it does need 5 seats which a great many coupes don't have. A saloon or Estate would do.

Pads and discs at the front, front wheel bearing, service & Cambelt and water pump so likely £500+, maybe £600. I know to some this isn't a huge amount but it is to me and wouldn't be something I could afford to pay in one go. Plus any MOT issues as it's due at the end of the month.

I don't think I do enough mileage to make a diesel worth it. 10-12k a year

I think really the time to move on is when your budget allows a credible upgrade which currently it doesn't seem to. Most of the £3-5k range are not going to be THAT much different or really much newer than the car you've already got - some of the suggestions are even based on the same platform.

I thought about buying this one below a few weeks ago before I bought my ford focus

that is an impressive mileage, if thats got full service history it's well worth a look tbh

Time to sell the focus :p
The main thing that put me off was that I had loads of trouble with the cd player jumping/skipping and not reading CD's in my RX8 and it looks like these had the same type of stereo's which are very hard to change to an aftermarket one due to it being wired into the dashboard display and heater system..
And the built in cd player in my father mazda 2 also packed up, so he bought another one and the CD side on that one also pack up

The titanium X is great value, has a massive boot and has the power to keep you happy which is why I mentioned it earlier but don't expect anymore than 30mpg as I've never had over 25 in my ST although I do drive it very hard.
That one with 27,000 miles looks great for around 4.5k
The 2010 with power shift is way underpriced looks suspicious

The 2.5 in the Mondeo has a different map I think?

Heh had an idea of a Seat Exeo. not a single one on Autotrader as a petrol!

Powershift is Ford's DSG Style gearbox AFAIK.
