Car suggestions, £3k-£5k, bit of poke

The 2.5 in the Mondeo has a different map I think?

Heh had an idea of a Seat Exeo. not a single one on Autotrader as a petrol!

Powershift is Ford's DSG Style gearbox AFAIK.

I know I looked at Exeo's a while back trying to find a petrol model is nigh on impossible lol it's crazy how few they must have sold. The best all rounder is the Mondeo ST220 as many will tell u on here if you don't mind the older shape.

Bit strange your looking at these Mondeo's when you already said this

I've discounted a focus ST 5Cyl as 30mpg doesn't appeal, .
As I can't see them 5 pot Mondeo's having a better MPG then a lighter 5 pot focus ST

You're going to move from a car which you know, to a car which you don't know. It may need no work at all but it may need loads of work. But considering that most people move on a car in this price range just as they need work, then the likelihood is that you're going to buy someone elses bill.

Fix what you have or increase your budget imho.

I've had it for nearly four years and just feel it's time to move on

But you aren't really moving on if you are considering a Golf? It's essentially just a different badged version of what you have. It's not going to be hugely newer, quicker, or more economical than what you currently have. Not to mention the possibility of whatever car you buy having issues or needing consumables.

Pads and discs at the front, front wheel bearing, service & Cambelt and water pump so likely £500+, maybe £600. I know to some this isn't a huge amount but it is to me and wouldn't be something I could afford to pay in one go. Plus any MOT issues as it's due at the end of the month.

If you are struggling with "consumable" and general running costs of the car you have now, why would you even be considering something with more performance, that potentially has more expensive service parts (e.g. things like bigger brake discs), or the potential to generate big bills.

But those things are part and parcel of running any car (unless you get something chain-driven but even then chains can snap, pumps can fail), and moving from one known car to an unknown car of a similar age/condition would just be shifting the deadline for those expenses if anything. Moving to an unknown car of a similar age/condition which is even more exotic is just increasing the potential for bills.

Sorry I cant be much help but I'd say for your budget and requirements, better than what you have isn't really out there. Personally, if the car was going to throw up some bills I couldn't afford in one go I'd look at an interest free credit card and put the work on that, then pay it off before the interest free offer expires, plenty of 2 year deals available.

There's not much point getting a new car if its only going to be a side grade at the most, you know what's currently wrong with the Cupra, if you buy something fast for 5 - 6k it isn't going to be without its own potential issues, which could end up worse than what you're dealing with now.

Good luck though!

I don't think it's worth replacing the Cupra with anything at that budget. Whatever you get will be at most a year or two younger, and will be so similar in stats and spec the "upgrade" will be more of a side-step, likely to bore you just as much once the novelty "new car" has worn off.

The 5cyl Focus ST isn't to bad. I used to get 28mpg on mine in mixed driving. Which is about normal for a performance car of that size and era. As long as you get the block mod done (to remove the risk of cracked liners) that Volvo engine will last forever as well. They also sound great and are very tuneable, with loads of torque :)

For 40+ MPG AND performance your looking at 10k+ as theres nothing old enough yet.

The FN2 Type R does have a firm ride, but it's nothing to be put off by. The handling is fantastic and the noise :)

I have an FN2 2.2ctdi.

Fn2 can be seen as crashy, i personally love mine

but 40mpg wont be seen, Its not bad on fuel though in my personal opinion. I get around 35 average if im driving sensible, but my onboard is saying average 29

I doubt you will get 40mpg out of anything with some poke at this price range

Whats wrong with something like this?

Just realized not much different than the ops current car. Better interior though.

If you can get over the car's big bum suppose to be a good car.

It isn't a facelift - this didn't happen until late 2010. Potentially a good car for the money, make sure the gearbox oil has been changed every 3 years/37k miles though.

Isnt the powershift an additional service? Im sure someone on here mentioned it being liek 600 alone!
It's about £250 for an oil and filter change every 3 years. Not the end of the world.

Powershift is Ford's DSG Style gearbox AFAIK.

Correct. 6 speed dual wet-clutch auto.

PowerShift is a nice gearbox.

They need an oil and filter change every 3 years/37.5k which costs £200-£250 at a dealer. The oil is more than £15 a litre and it takes 6-7 litres to fill.

2.5T engines are not without their problems - the liners can crack and they're not good on fuel.

The 2.0T Ecoboost is a good price, I wouldn't say it's suspiciously cheap as they have been dropping for a while now. 30MPG average and 35MPG on longer runs is easily achievable. The Titanium X Sport is the one everyone wants so they carry a premium.

Too small really. Kids are 15 & 17 now so need some rear legroom.

You say the but they really arent that small. I'm 6 ft 3 and cna comfortablt fit someone 6 ft behind me then obv passenger side you have even more room usually. And it fits the poke criteria.

i don't rag mine everywhere but I don't drive particular conservative and see 32 mpg on my short 15 min journey to work. Last time I done motorway miles was about an hour and i saw 38mpg.

Really like the look of this and I could probably stretch this far.

Four years newer than what I have.

That does look nice, but you are entering into Edition 30 money there. Which, with it's k04 engine, bigger brakes etc. and more exclusivity, would be the better buy.

Of course, you would struggle to find one with full leather, and you may need to install the RNS yourself.
