Audi A3 Thoughts

Youve got 9k to spend on a car and worry about insurance?

Why not buy something a bit older and cheaper and use the saving to pay a couple of years insurance?

Either that or as others have said stick with the polo.

When my insurance on the 1.6 A3 will be £2k a year or a 2L will be £8k i don't really think getting a car 4 years older will really cover the increase :p

Assuming you must have points or a claim or something or those insurance figures just don't stack up.

I know insurance comparisons are generally useless because of the variation possible but 8k to get insured on a 2l a3?!

Save a tonne of cash buying a model from 58 onwards, if the facelift model is the car you 'really' want. I have an 8P2 (2008) and has the exact same infotainment system (with the heated seat option) and costs thousands less in comparison, you're effectively paying for the exterior here.

The 1.6TDI is awful. Unlike most on here I have actually had an A3 Sportback with the 1.6TDI, as a courtesy car. It is way way underpowered engine for the A3. Its not very good in a A1 let alone something A3 sized.

I'd look for a 2.0TDI, black edition spec or S-line and try to get xenons. Sat nav being a nice bonus - but fairly easy to retrofit. Also there are different 2.0 TDI engines available...140ps and 170ps.

How old are you? If you're over 20 then I can't see insurance being as massive issue, though it depends on a number of factors, like where you live etc.

Widen the net a bit to look at alternative marques in the class. Perhaps a Focus ecoboost 125, budget should easily cover a decent example in titanium trim albeit not your preferred current model. Insurance hopefully not too bad as only 1.0L engine, but who knows. IF you can get an a3 for £2k then £8k for a 2l a3 sounds like a bit of an outlier.

I'd guess what you'd go for isn't really an option for the op, based on what's been linked going by the price mileage 'compromise'. I'd have thought you of all would know better!

As above, so my point still stands. I'm fairly sure that there are more TDI's on the road than petrol equivalents, so the diesel is likely to have an even higher premium.

Eh? How do you figure that?

Just because they are more common doesn't instantly mean a higher percentage of claims and consequently risk/premium.

Surely the 8P1 was from 2003, and the 8P2 from around 2005/6 (unsure when, but when they changed the grill from a two grill set-up to a single grill). So the 2008 face-lift would be a 8P3 no?

That is the generally accepted naming that I understood (although to confuse things the Sport back is 8PA although they are all single grill iirc)

03 - 05 1
05 - 08 2
58 - 12 iirc 3

No not really - as it's discussed to death on here, it doesn't necessarily work as you expect.

While they be 100k diesel A3s on the road maybe only 10k make claims.

Maybe there are 20k petrol A3s and 5k make claims.

While there are more claims in total for diesel a3s, the percentage for petrol is higher.

Obviously examples, but there are more factors that just how common a car is.

we'll have to agree to disagree, I'm sure there's a reason why it's been discussed to death :p
