Nintendo 2DS still worth it in 2016?

So I'm going to Paris next month for the wife's 30th and was debating picking one of these up for the trip to pass the time on the Eurostar.

Just wondering if they are a decent pickup these days - I know the consensus is that they are more a kids purchase as it doesn't close, but given the NX announcement is due anytime now, not sure whether it's worth forking out the cash for a 3DS/XL.

Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated.

Cheers!

I just rebought one 2 weeks ago after breaking mine. I still think worth it. Can play any DS game many old GB/GBC/NES games from eshop. There are only 1 3ds game I think that cant be played (xenoblade). I find them more comfortable than 3ds/xl (big hands).
So I think yeah they are worth it, hold their value quite well too if you want to resell it.

There's a bunch of decent games to choose from - the NX won't have anything like the catalogue to choose from at launch - and, depending on the price, I doubt you'll regret it. Having said that, NX games should blow anything on the 3DS away! The new Zelda will likely look stunning on a handheld. Sorry, this probably hasn't made it easier at all :D

I would get the New 3DS, no point getting the 2D now unless its very cheap.

New 3DS tends to be £150-£170
New 3DS XL £170 +
2DS £79.99.
So it comes down to how much you use it. If its just for a trip to france then the odd bit of play time 2DS hands down. If you plan on buying some bigger games and putting many hours into it then maybe worth punting up for a New 3DS.

Cheers for the responses so far.

I guess my reasoning for potentially getting the 2DS is this potential NX announcement-forking out £80 for a 2DS and then whatever amount the NX will be would please the bank account more than say £150/175 for a 3DS/XL.

But then I'll always know that the specs in the 2DS isn't as powerful as the others....

New 3DS is also not worth getting. Ask yourself this: would you rather spend £600 on a GTX 1080 graphics card or £1000 on a Titan X? The regular 3DS models are like the 1080 and the 'new' ones are like the Titan X. You pay a lot more for the 'new' models and they are better than older models in some ways, but not enough to justify the price difference. Especially since Amazon has done £100 3DS XL with 2 games offers in the past. Which puts it as cheaper than a 2DS, counting the games. Such a good deal, I was tempted to buy a 2nd 3DS lol.

Either a 2DS or an original 3DS XL is your best bet. The very first 3DS has battery issues as far as I heard.

NX is unlikely to play 3DS games but it could have a portable aspect to it. Even if it did, it won't be anywhere near as cheap as a 3DS... not even the more expensive 'new' models.

Depends, if you are playing the odd game here or there then 2DS or older model is fine. But if you want the SNES emulation and better preformace on certain games then New 3DS is the way to go.

I never like the 2DS because of the horrible design but its for young kids so it has the cheap plastic feel, no 3D, slightly smaller screen, mono speaker and obvious the slower CPU compared to the newer model.

I wouldnt be put off the getting a 3DS now because of the NX, I doubt it will be coming out in March and there are many games coming out for it yet.

On that first statement... well I'd link to some homebrew things but I don't quite think this section of the forums allows for it. My point there would be that older 3DS models can still play SNES games, with no issues. It's just Nintendo's emulator is not a very efficient one. And better performance is limited to very few games. I know people with New 3DS have been complaining on various games about how they don't get better performance.

I can understand not liking the 2DS due to the design. Which is why I reminded folks of the ridiculous 3DS XL off that's been around (a 3DS XL cheaer than a 2DS). No 3D isn't much of an argument, it's a gimmick that very few people use. I myself only used it once when first unboxing my 3DS and didn't touch it afterwards, since it messes with the image and lowers framerates.

Keep in mind that I am also biased and hate Nintendo handhelds, especially the new 3DS, so take my words with a heap of salt.

Yeah I know but I was talking about the official Snes emulation from the eShop.

Nintendo's profit margins on those things must be absolutely massive, considering the hardware is really quite poor by any modern standard, and it's not like it's even got a particularly premium design to account for some of the cost.

Cheers people.

Think I'm going to get a 2DS-I can pick one up with a few games on the bay on the cheap which should tide me over.

I was thinking to get the 2DS as I don't care at all about 3D, however the form factor is annoying. It seems very difficult to transport and the screen will get rekt unless you keep the carrying pouch which adds extra size.

Bar my trip, I probably won't be taking it anywhere so the form factor isn't too big of an issue.

The only thing I'm compromising on is the SNES stuff in the estore, but weighing up the pros and cons that I can get a 2DS and a good few decent games for the price of the New 3DS, it's a no brainer really.

If you don't have to travel with it thats sorted, £100 cheaper without losing much (I think 3D is useless after trying for awhile on my friends 3DS). Its just if I get it I plan to play during my travel to work so that part was annoying.
