BBC license fee proposals...

It's not just entertainment though, it's public information. BBC News both TV and Web, the rest of the BBC website and Radio often inform just as much as they entertain and that's important for society.

Too bad that they are nothing more than Government stooges, otherwise that might be relevant.

Hopefully the tories dismantle it.

I could sit and watch BBC 4 documentaries from morning until night. I like television that informs and educates me. I'm not much interested in a load of American make believe.

Hollywood being the biggest industry of make believe for many decades that everyone flocks to.

They may be part of your culture but they will never be part of mine. I retire next week so as you will gather I'm totally the wrong age demographic.

I get that younger people don't understand the slapstick of Mrs Browns Boys and maybe Two Doors Down. Again it's comedy from a different era, but having said that it's very very popular.

Personally I think American imports ruin television but that's my personal opinion. The good ones are few and far between. At the end of the day if we all liked the same things the world would be a very dull place.

One of my smartest moves however was the day I got rid of Sky - I have never regretted it for one minute and neither has my wallet.

That's what I agree with.
I'd rather watch fiction (ie game of thrones etc) than comedy.
But I don't expect others to pay for it.
You have to choice but to pay for sky.
It's getting to the point where of you have the Internet you will have to pay the licence.

Not sure that's been true in many years. Gaming overtook DVD/Bluray and Hollywood years back. Gaming is the biggest industry of make believe that people flock to.

I agree with you, but do they need BILLIONS for a news / public information service???

You can say that about taxes is general can't you? There are lot's of things where my tax pounds goes to that I vehemently disagree with but I can't opt out of and so it is with the licence fee.
And lets not forget the fact that ONS actually classified the license fee as a tax a while back, so I don't just see why they don't just roll it in to normal taxes and be done with it.

Let's just add in car tax at the same time while we're at it, plenty of people who don't drive but lets charge them as well for something they're not liable for.
Same as the fact that you are paying the council some money to up keep the roads... but wait, what if you aren't using them.... Or those pesky schools... why should I have to pay for them when I don't have kids.

Well if you want to start down that road then why for example should I be paying for child tax credits or a myriad of other things I don't take advantage of out of general taxation?

Thats how its always been since the invention kf battery powered tvs.

Othwrwise people would just have a tv/batteries watch tv then charge it when not watching

May well be how it's always been, but it needs updating surely.

Another case of rules/regulations being left behind and not moving with the times.

It will be all content no doubt. Hopefully Netflix / Amazon pull out of that content. It's pants anyway!

I truly only care about Luther/Sherlock/Peaky Blinders/The Fall. I'm happy to pay for those on a per episode basis via Amazon than pay a full licence fee.

We're only getting one more season of Luther if we're lucky, Sherlock comes around once an eternity, there was an 18 month gap before latest season of PB, been a while since last eason of The Fall as well, there's no consistency on production.

Just looked up all the BBC sitcoms.

The only vaguely recent ones I enjoyed were Some Girls (cheesy), Pramface (cheesy), Outnumbered and Coupling.

4 shows out of 15 years of programming is not a great statistic, lol.

All that money used for sitcoms has been shifted into reality TV it seems.

You could argue that roads & schools are a necessity, while TV is a luxury

That's what I say
Schools are needed even if you don't have kids to pay for who will be paying your pension.
Roads. Even if you don't use them it's pretty damn obvious you need them.
Broadcast TV? Not in same boat
