Hi All,

Taking the kids to New York in October half term on an evening flight arriving into Newark - because it will be later and they will be tired I want to book a car transfer to the hotel rather than buses, trains etc.

Can anyone recommend a company they have used before? Dial7 seem pretty popular from what I have seen?

Thanks

Went to NY in May and got in late and just jumped in a yellow cab outside, three of us and it was a set price, quick and really easy, used supershuttle on the way back to the airport and it was nearly 45 minutes late and almost missed the flight

I always use Dial7, you can get voucher codes to bring the price down further. Generally very good although last time I had a bad experience with my transfer back to the airport.

I complained and they apologised as well as issueing a credit for next time.

I usually get a yellow cab or an uber. The yellow cab prices are fixed from the airports into the city.

Go with a yellow cab and experience New York within a few minutes

The yellow cabs are awful! Literally no space for one person let alone a family the OP wants to take. You'll likely experience traffic and it will take around an hour so there is no chance I'd want to be stuck in a yellow cab when I can pre-book something.

The yellow cab we used was for three people with one case each, they also have people carrier types as well so space should be fine

Yellow Cabs are only about $50 from Newark iirc, includes Tolls etc. Stay away from the private hires that bug you in arrivals.

I used Dial 7 when I was there, but once I got to my apartment I used Uber for all my other journeys and it was a lot cheaper. The Dial 7 driver even specified the exact amount he wanted as a tip: at the end of the drive he said "the fare is $X, tolls are $X, and tip is $X, so that'll be a total of $X". I still kind of regret agreeing to it tbh, he wasn't particularly friendly or helpful.

Just a bit off topic but if you go to the museum of Natural history it has an entrance fee of about $22 but it's a suggested price, I wasn't prepared to pay that, tighter than a duck's bum, so went to the counter and just paid $1 each for the three of us to get in. My brother and Nephew were a bit embarrassed and wouldn't wait while I paid :) but saved a ton of cash and wont see the guy behind the desk again so who cares :)

You can't be that tight if you pay to go to NYC in the first place!

Are you one of those guys who you buy a drink for in the pub then they kindly remind you later in the night you owe them one? :p

I got a good discount using avios points for the trip as well :)

I'm not that tight with drinks though :) I just don't tip very often and America expect you to tip which usually means that it's a no, I just think do I want them to have my money or do I want it

I just used a yellow cab, but it was before Uber was really a major thing - I'd probably just use that now.

You do realise that in most states tipped staff get paid virtually nothing and earn most of their salary from tips? In New Jersey the minimum wage for employees in tipped positions is only $2.13 an hour...

It's just how things work here, if the service in a restaurant is good I'll happily tip 20%+.
