Samsung Launches CFG70, CF791 Quantum Dot Curved Gaming Monitors

For IFA 2016, Samsung is launching two new quantum dot curved gaming monitors, the CFG70 and the CF791.

What's special about the new Samsung CFG70 and CF791 is that they'll be Samsung's first quantum dot curved gaming monitors.

These quantum dot monitors feature a wide color gamut of up to 125% of the sRGB spectrum and are also the first cadmium-free quantum dot curved monitors which are much more environmentally friendly than previous cadmium based models.

Gaming features onboard the Samsung CFG70 include a Gaming UX OSD interface which will allow gamers to quickly access the dashboard to monitor essential settings such as response time, refresh rate, etc.

The Samsung CF791 will only be available in the 34″ screen size.

Samsung will formally introduce the new curved gaming monitors at their IFA press conference on September 1.

The CFG70 24″ will retail for $399, the CFG70 27″ will retail for $499, and the CF791 will retail for $999 when it launches in 4Q2016.

Particularly like the look of that 34" ultrawide. Are these viable competitors to the Asus and Acers? I would have thought so...

If they can sort out the motion i'd pick VA over ips all day. Bleed/glow is the single reason I didn't drop a bunch of money on a 3440*1440 ultrawide.

Very interesting. Can somebody give a quick pros/cons of quantum dot vs traditional LCD? I'm not too familiar with exactly what quantum dot monitors are and what benefits they bring.

Like the VA didn't have their own problems too.

Quite interested in this Quantum Dot tech though. I've read somewhere it's supposed to make it "better than OLED", which I can hardly believe but let's see.

It is purely and simply an alternative form of backlighting. Quantum Dots are used in place of the traditional phosphors - everything else is exactly the same. The same LCD technology is used. The only real benefit of this technology is that it is designed to enhance colour gamut and depending on the implementation could possibly enhance uniformity. Don't be duped into thinking it does anything else - these are still LCD monitors with a Quantum Dot backlight, they are not QLED displays. They come later. ;)

Here is good summary on QD-backlit displays:

Ultimately, its just another form of "wide gamut LED" - only "phosphor" is made by quantum dot process (so better for colour purity) and incorporated directly into diffuser sheet instead being on LEDs. Which should in theory give it more work life. Uniformity unlikely to be affected just by that if primary light source are still edge-placed blue LEDs and they will directly influence (non)uniformity of quantum dot emissive layer.

I've seen some reviews of TVs with QD LED backlight and their uniformity is not different from usual ones - some are better, some are totally atrocious (if you think that monitors get bad bleed/DSE, you should see some "high-end" TVs ;) )

Also, not like Samsung is first here. Sony used quantum dots in their "Triluminos" range for quite a while, only they were avoiding mentioning the term "quantum dot" in marketing materials unlike samsung.

QLED on the other hand could be another story entirely. But not clear when such displays will arrive, and even then this tech, like any tech when pixels wear down individually, is dangerously prone to burn-in.

No. All current technology advertised as using 'Quantum Dots' is LCD based.

How long will they drip feed us?

This reminds me of when they started offering LED backlights and Currys et al were selling them as the next big thing. Do they all get together at some conference and decide how they're going to milk us for the next 5 years or what?

I'm looking forward to this CF791. It seems to be the monitor I've been waiting for two years. In the meantime I got an XG270HU (TN, FreeSync) to make time, after cheking the OD issues where already addressed (unlike the XF270HU IPS, with terrible ghosting AFAIK).

You mean the CF791 (C34F791) I assume? Yes, it is certainly a very appealing product on paper.

Interesting find.

Near the bottom he says that a Samsung rep told him they'd definitely be a Gsync version in the future.

The intial product showcase video mentioned that the 27" version would be G-SYNC. But now it transpires that the initial 27" version, at least, supports FreeSync. G-SYNC products are certainly a possibility in the future. Hopefully not only for the smaller models but 34" model as well. ;)

Everyone should be careful about the FreeSync-support, and double-check it before a potential purchase. For example, with Samsung C32F391, the initial articles of the F-series dashingly promoted FreeSync, but later on the 32" model quietly omitted that. (The 24" and 27" models maintained it, though.)

Unfortunately, some retailers are still advertising the 32" model as FreeSync-compatible, while it most apparently is not.

And I was ready to purchase it, as well. But instead, now I'm waiting for the Acer XZ321Q, which should be pretty similar to the C32F391, but with FreeSync and 144Hz.

Finger, toes and anything else I can cross for that 34" gysnc version :D
