"I'm Skint"

My mortgage is £2,400 and I really don't want to go into the monthly outgoings. It's all relative. As you earn more you buy nicer things and take on more costs.

I've heard it for years from numerous different friends but to me just seem like a poor excuse. Nights out I could understand but some even say it when I ask them if they want to get lunch which is £7 for a full meal and pint!

Based on someone earning 20k the takehome would be £1415

Base figures for a nice(ish) apartment / half rent in a good house;
Rent £400
Bills £250
Food £220 (£50 x 4.33)
Lunches (£8 x 20) £160

£385 disbosible income a month left over

How can people be skint if you have a job earning 20k + (presuming you are sensible, none alcoholic / drug user / gambler / hooker addict etc.)

Are they really your friends, maybe they don't like you, to them you could be a mithering ******* :)

As a few have mentioned on here, 'skint' is a relative term.

When I was in the UK despite earning a great wage I still struggled to save the figure that I felt I wanted to every month. And to achieve my 'target' this I was cheap with how I lived and treated myself.

So I would turn down 'nights out' etc because I committing a lot of my income for other investments etc.

The one that gets me is the sort who can go out for a drink or something immediately after pay day but if it were a couple of weeks later they can't afford it.

Either they need to money for stuff or they don't. Some people just can't control their finances I think. :p

To be fair I have only started to knuckle down with my savings in the last few years, and before that I had a very cavalier attitude to spending my cash. Now I save around 50% of my salary a month by bunging it into a savings account the moment payday arrives and I am much happier for it.

move up north and stop moaning about house prices

I think it is like anything really, you buy what you think you can afford (or what you want to afford)

Up north you could find a property which would assertain a monthly mortgage of £800 or you could find a property that would be £400 a month. Boith maybe in the same area, but different class/quality of house.

For example, both houses in same area of Leeds, both 3 bedroomed.

This place in Leeds (LS7 postcode with a 10% deposit would be around £450 per month mortgage. http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-54963700.html

This place in Leeds (LS7 postcode with a 10% deposit would be around £1200 a month mortgage. http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-55791526.html

The UK does seem to generalise on location vs price. Of couirse similiar properties in style/size/quality are higher in price the further south you go, but the point remains you can find expensive properties in the north, east, south and west and visa versa too.

The point is, some people will want to invest more into their property and not have as much funding for socialising, but others may prefer a lower class of home and enjoy scoialising more. Neither is wrong, but it seems people have an adverse opinion on whichever doesn't fall into their own choice.

Hang out with rich people then...

If you were to presume to know every aspect of my life, from salary to rent, medical bills, cost of food, fuel consumption, work expenses, etc, before deciding what I can afford, then dictating to me what I should spend my money on - You'd be dining alone forever more!!

Because life costs money.
I don't eat breakfast or lunch, in order to save money, yet I still have to save up for a £30 outgoing.

my out-goings a month in london add up to £1400 this includes car, rent(50% of it, other half is paid by brother), food, bills, gym, phone etc.

this is excluding any purchases that I make, e.g. clothes, gadgets etc.. I don't go out much to drink or clubs but I do go out to cinemas, food places, car shows etc which all add up to I'd say another 300 or so a month. BUT I still don't feel that paying a £10 or so for a meal is a good idea when I'm trying to get more money together for new car purchase or deposit.

I'd rather tell my mates that I don't feel like paying that amount rather than I'm "skint" which would mean that I have no money left which is not the case it's just a simple "I'd rather spend it on other things"

Jesus wept, spending £7 once ever couple of months to enjoy a lunch with someone is hardly going to break the bank. It's a nice and pleasant social activity.

They might of already been out 3 times that week with other people though. So adding yet another £7 might be a no go. You never know someones financial situation

I'm skint, I have about £60 in my account to last the rest of the month, bearing in mind I probably use £30/40 a week in petrol.

come at me

£400 in rent seems normal. It's what I was paying when I lived in Manchester. 2 bed apartment split between 2 people. Not sure what the issue is.

I take it you live north of the wall....

Best not to judge really. You never really know another mans outgoings needs or family

You can be skint or well off whatever you earn and by whatever your definitions are.

My basic regular outgoings per month are roughly:

Mortgage: £1,540
Council Tax: £255
2 x Cars Road Tax & Insurance: £105
House Insurances: £75
Utilities: £250
Food: £500
Train to London: £650
Petrol: £150

Total: £3,525

Am I skint? Well if I earned £60,000 a year (in the top 7% percentile in the UK) my take home would leave precisely nothing so I would be skint. I'm very lucky not to be but you can see how it is relative.
