PlayStation 4 Pro in-bound

I can't remember the last time I bought a disk. I stream and download all of my music, games, movies (including a few 4K ones) and play them via my media centre on my 4K screen.

I really don't see the appeal of physical media these days, it just seems redundant. Especially when you have to spend ££££ on a unit which can play all your archaic disk based media. ;)

I suppose it is helpful when you have a slow internet connection, but in this day and age, everyone should have fast internet anyway!

So you okay with compressed 4k with no HDR and terrible audio?
Some people want the full benefit when upgrading.

No UHD BluRay drive?!

Just regular 1080P BluRay on a machine being touted for 4K. This makes 0 sense.
MS's £200 Xbox One S does UHD BluRay.. What is going on lol.

You mean Xbox 1 S 1tb for £300 does UHD Bluray? But then again the PS4 Pro has 3x the power so something gonna give at that price.

But then again the XB1S doesnt do Hi Def Audio, supposed to be in a patch (maybe, sometime) so guess its a stand alone player for you?

At the end of the day Sony don't want mediaphiles just buying the system for watching BD films and that's that. They want to get you into the PSN ecosystem and sell you games and films on there. If you want 4K physical discs, buy a Sony UHD disc player.

I suspect with the Pro they're probably making very little profit on the hardware.

For the gamers innit? They must have figures that show how many PS4 users use the Film and TV apps or whatever it is for watching Blu-Ray. Maybe it was just a small number and so they didn't want to bother with the extra costs in hardware and developing UHD playback?

It does seem bizarre but it is what it is. This is the Netflix generation now.

I don't know a single person who actually uses Blu-Ray discs. They've all got nVidia Shield boxes.

As a games machine only - the Xbox One S is giving you 720p on some multiplat games, where even the base PS4 is 900p or 1080p comparably. The PS4 Pro will hopefully offer 1080p-1440p range with some extra gloss perhaps? No argument for the Xbox - UNLESS its more than just a gaming machine to you and you want a 4K a Bluray player too. Game exclusives not withstanding of course. Annoying as I do prefer Xbox exclusives but prefer PS this gen for better resolution.

If people want a games machine then they should should do the proper thing and build a bloody gaming PC. Bleating about 900p at 30 FPS is something PC gamers forgot about years ago.

I use consoles for console exclusive games and now, UHD Blu Ray compatibility.

As for Blu Ray and it's possible demise. Perhaps - but it's still a very popular format. In the USA alone, the Force Awakens Blu Ray has sold over 5 million copies, far more than the DVD version. And the 5 million figure is no where near the top movie for most Blu Rays sold in the country. But, how many have streamed it or pirated it, you ask? I don't know. Once you see Mad Max on UHD at a transfer rate of about 9 times that of 4K Netflix streaming and hear the uncompressed audio of the Dolby Atmos soundtrack (if only I had this set up in my living room), it's difficult to even justify going to the cinema. Make your own damn popcorn and drink alcohol to boot.

The PS4 Pro looks good and I'm sure I'd enjoy it if I bought one but one wonders how much of a loss Microsoft is taking per Xbox One S console.

Xbox One S starts from around £200, There are different HDD sizes, but all have same spec. I.e 4K resolution, streaming of 4K. Up-scaling of games to 4K, HDR and a UHD BluRay Player. all the different models play UHD BluRay?

Not sure what your thinking of.

Sony is major player in BluRay, to not include UHD BluRay player with the PS4 Pro seems like madness to me.

No 4k drive is just stupid, won't be buying this, and I'll wait for Scorpio now.

Agreed, no 4K drive is weird..

Profit will be huge, same CPU (Just higher clocked) now cheaper than ever. Same memory, (Again just a bump in clocks) Similar GPU with a few more shaders. Same BluRay drive (No UHD drive) Probably need a bigger PSU and cost of plastic may go up for a few pence for the layered George Foreman grill look. But yeah I imagine this is cheaper to produce than the OG PS4 was back at launch..

On a sort of related note I don't understand people who need more than 16GB of storage on a phone either, everything is streamed nowadays, movies, music, photos and contacts all stored in the cloud.

Think about people on tube journey's or flights where streaming is not possible

Then 16GB is simply not enough:)

Xbox One S starts from around £200, There are different HDD sizes,.

Baring in mind that lowest advertised price so far is £250 for the 500Gb version which according to rumours wont be availabe on release (and possibly for a month or more after the 2TB launch version), so much more likely to be around £350 on release....

Still think its wrong of Sony (who's first BR player was the PS3) to not include a 4k player, beyond bonkers given they dont have any UHD player on the market yet.

wtf??? they bother putting in a uhd drive but dont include hi def audio.....that makes it completely pointless

edit - I suppose Sony could always release a PS4 UHD drive , not sure if they could therefore make it significantly cheaper than the Samsung / Panny ($100? for a bare USB drive?) for those interested in UHD BR - therefore catering for the gamers only who arent interested in anything other than a suped up console but also thinking about those early BR "investors" who have been sligthly ******* by not getting a built in drive

Too much to ask for most likely but you never know

Its £249 at Tesco with fifa 17. It was previously £229 i believe.

Wonder what the percentage is of those 40 million PS4 owners who actually own a 4K TV.

More importantly how many of the 40 million will upgrade to a PS4 Pro and want to buy a 4K TV to go with it.

The lack of a single box console/streamer/blu-ray player from Sony seems an odd choice. I'd be in the market for the new PS4 and a new TV but I don't a seperate player for cost and space reasons so I'll hold off.
