PlayStation 4 Pro in-bound

I'm pretty underwhelmed with the Pro tbh. It may be super powerful but any grunt it has is going to be seriously held back by the PS4. And let's face it - it's not going to be rendering anything bar the simplest visuals at 4k. We'll be getting a slightly higher res/upscaling combo. My biggest disappointment with the PS4 from pretty much day one was the majority of games running at 30fps. With the Pro we have the grunt to address this and it's not going to happen. The other attraction was a 4k blu-ray player and it looks like that's missing too. 4k streaming is nice, but i'd pick a 1080p blu-ray over it quality wise. The only real incentive, and the main driving force Sony are keeping quiet about, is VR. Framerate is massively important with VR and the PS4 won't be up to the job. The Pro will. Sony want to push VR and couldn't afford to have a solution that looked plain rubbish compared to the PC options. So, if the VR turns out to be great i'll get one, otherwise there's little incentive even with a 4k hdr tv (unless you have money to spare and want a new toy), and virtually no reason if you have a 1080 panel.

Seen as I don't own a 4k TV yet Im not interested in getting the pro, it seems weird theres no 4k drive, even if the user base is small now,for physical media it seems odd to leave it out, guess costs come into it.

Having recently preordered the xbox s 500gb to sit along side my launch day ps4 I will have best of both even if I cant get the benefit of the xbox S 4k capabilities.
They should both do me for the next 1-2 years and by then I may have a 4k TV and more news on scorpio and possibly a ps5 will be announced.

Saying that Its interesting to see what direction MS and Sony take in the future. I can see Sony announcing something else towards the end of next year to compete with the Scorpio.

Its not just a 4K to make the most of it its a 4K TV with HDR, as I understand only more premium models have this feature.

Do FHD panels have HDR?

Only asking as they made a big deal of the 4 and Pros HDR feature.

I hadn't a clue why everyone was mentioning input lag on 4K TVs but it seems it's only important for competitive multiplayer which I don't care about.

And HDR creates terrible input lag from what I have read, even in game mode.

Yeah, and the rest, twitch games like CoD as well will be important for input lag.

I wonder what % of people watch blu-ray films on their PS4? Can't say I've ever used mine and don't buy physical media like most. I expect they ran the numbers and decided to leave it out. Strange decision, especially since most people were surprised by the cost of £349. I'm sure a few would have preferred to pay £399 with the 4k drive.

Pre-ordered but still undecided. It depends what real world difference it makes to games on my 1080p TV I guess.

I expect the majority of console owners will use it for three things - FIFA/Madden, Call of Duty and Netflix. That's it. Sony will know exactly how many PSN users are using the Blu-Ray app and have obviously seen it's not enough to warrant a UHD drive.

I had a thought about the missing UHD drive, and you know what - its not really a requirement as lets face it, media is changing and many stream and download content. So , lack of 4K drive, ok I was a bit erm Sony are you sure that is a good idea.

But if they have cut the costs to offer a higher rated GPU for a higher spec PS4 for the dedicated console gamer for this year and make it affordable, then it might not be such a poor idea after all.

As like you say, I have not once watched a blu ray movie on my PS4, in fact I have not used any of the PS4 media playback features other then Spotify during playing games.

What I want from a gaming console is lag free , stable, tear free games and that is something that most consoles have failed to provide truth told.

Be interesting to see how PS4 pro fairs with that requirement. But it was once told to me that its just the nature of console gaming, either put up with the un-stable frame rate and potential tearing in some titles or just not use a games console.

I wonder if they're still mandating that every game from October onwards has to have a Pro mode or whether they relaxed that requirement now. Mark Cerny's language of "asking" devs to support the Pro was diplomatic.

Was looking to replace my launch-day PS4 anyhow so this will be a definite purchase for me :) :)

Looks like it'll be 2019 before we see a PS5 as they clearly stated this (PS4 PRO) is a new mid-cycle refresh model they are introducing.

Either way its still got more grunt than the new Xbone S (I've got one on pre-order for this month) and its going to be at least June 2017 before we see scorpio.

Couldn't give a stuff about UHD BluRay, I stopped buying physical media films at DVD.

Since I'm not planning on buying 4k tv, and won't be for a long time (my next TV is going to be 1080p OLED)....I really need to see more of what the Pro will offer to 1080p gamers.

Ditto - I'm happy to stick with 1080 for now as I'll use the desktop to push 1440+. I'm maybe tempted to upgrade anyway as my launch PS4 is getting on a bit now but I still can't see why consoles have pushed for 4K gaming so early

That's not true. If input lag is excessive any action game suffers. I played Uncharted 3 on my mates tv and it was awful, with a noticeable delay between input and something happening on the screen. Both 4k and HDR tend to add additional lag on top of panels that aren't particularly great in the first place. Teles are getting better and we are seeing some HDR low lag options, but currently there's few 4k hdr panels i'd want to have HDR turned on for gaming.

Look at the new Tombraider for PS4 pro, gives you these option in game
4k at 30 FPs (said to be native 4K)
1080P @60 with dips to 45 min
1080P locked to 30 with all the GPu bells and whistles you can through at it.

I like this idea and its something you can select on the fly by the sounds of it, hopefully other devs will take this idea on board.

Think about people on tube journey's or flights where streaming is not possible

Then 16GB is simply not enough:)

Many planes and trains have WiFi though nowadays, what sort of journey are people taking where they don't have access to the internet and are going through more than 16GB of locally stored content?

I think we will get frame rate improvements on all games even without a dedicated Pro mode. Like the Xbox One S on some games.

The CPU upclock and GPU won't know how to limit the old games to keep in the frame rate stutters of the original console. I'm sure we will see more stable frame rates across all games.

Unless my current PS4 packs in then I'm not interested at all. I'm not spending £350 just for some slightly improved graphics.
