**** The Official Chinese Phones Thread ****

I'm looking at buying a new phone but I'm new to the Chinese phone market so forgive me for my ignorance. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 looks fun; http://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_redmi_note_4-8291.php

But what's the deal with people talking about global ROMs? I assume that because it's Chinese it comes with some proprietary operating system which isn't compatible with use in the UK or something? Is this the only way in which these phones differ from buying a phone from a high street vendor in the UK? Does buying a Chinese phone always mean flashing a non-stock operating system onto the device?

Thanks :)

Fill ya boots http://en.miui.com/forum-109-1.html. It will have the China rom on it so English and Chinese language only and some apps that you can't understand but most you can get rid of, you can download the google installer for the play store etc from this thread
http://en.miui.com/thread-349134-1-1.html.

I'm sure those are very useful links, but I think I've somewhat understated my lack of knowledge :D

So the second link provides a way of installing Google Play on MIUI8. Is that what the Redmi Note 4 ships with? If so then why are people talking about waiting for a global rom? What is a global rom?

From my very limited understanding .. Global roms are roms that have been released for the global market and have Play Store etc already installed.
The Xiaomi phones are very popular in india and due to copyright issues Xiaomi cant sell mediatek devices in India so they release a snapdragon version with a global rom normally, these also work on most of the UK 4g bands too. So i think its better to wait for the global release.
Hopefully it will only be a month or so away.
Im holding out.

ScoobyDoo has pretty much hit the nail on the head, personally I would not buy a Xiaomi device with a mediatek cpu in it as they are slow to update them, they seem to concentrate on snapdragon more.

Given the mobile phone market moves so quickly and that waiting 1 more month seems to always be preferred in terms of a newer/better product becoming available, do you think it's worth me looking at alternatives to the Redmi Note 4 if I'm interested in just buying a new phone immediately?

Tinder is buggered for me after MIUI 8 update for my Xiaomi Mi5 has to be something to do with the location settings because when I turn it off and then back on Tinder finds people again.

Nooooo this cant be happening :(

I'm getting a lot of gps inaccuracies and flakeyness since miui8 on note pro 3.

I've tried recalibration. It's still bouncing me 10-20m and switching/losing location on and off a lot in Pokémon go.

It's tolerable but annoying

Morning,

I am looking for a Dual sim phone to switch from away from Windows and a Microsoft 640XL. Love the phone but a couple of important work apps are missing.

Looking to spend about £100-150 and wonder what people would go for. I'm getting confused with device names. I think I would be happier with a Xiaomi but not sure what model

Looking for 5.2" screen or bigger
Decent camera.
Dual sim
Easy

What would you buy in my shoes?

Thanks in advance for your help

Barry

The latest xiaomi device to be released is the redmi note 4. That sounds like it is right up your alley. The only thing that may be slightly lacking is the camera. But most Chinese branded phones the cameras aren't anything amazing.

I also find the battery not so good since the update not that it matters much with quick charge but does not last as long for me.

Is there anything decent that ships with Stock Andriod or as near as possible to it?

Yeah, a Moto G4.
5.5" screen, dual sim and pretty much stock Android. Basically everything you said you wanted from the phone.

Also not an amazing camera, but I gotta admit that's an odd demand to make on budget of 150 quid. No phone in that price range will ever have a camera that's more than okay.

My son has a Vodafone SU6 and my comparison is crap.

My current phone is a 640XL, so wanting something to match or better that. Will look at the Moto again.

Also has anyone got any feedback ondx.com http://www.dx.com/p/xiaomi-redmi-no...w-3gb-ram-64gb-rom-silver-446022#.V9QQCOTrsy8 ???
