Connected PC to AV receiver via. optical, only stereo available

• MSI Z170A Gaming Pro Carbon motherboard (Realtek ALC1150)
• Pioneer VSX-324-K-P AV receiver

I have connected the PC to the AV receiver via. optical.

As in the receiver manual, I have selected DVD as the input then selected O1.

I am playing a 5.1 MKV but my rear speakers aren't playing any sound.

I run my games on my 4K TV and my AV receiver doesn't support 4k/60, only 4k30 and ARC on this setup only supports stereo.

I think it is that but apparently, it has not been updated for Windows 10 v1607 (build 14393.105) (Anniversary Update).

When you say 5.1 mkv what format is the audio in? If it's PCM then optical can only send stereo. You need either DTS or Dolby digital format so the receiver can decode.

If you want 5.1 in everything from optical you need a sound card like sound blaster z that can encode DTS and dolby on the fly and send to your receiver.

You could run HDMI separately to the TV and AVR from the video card, though you might need an adapter if your card only has one HDMI port.
