So my mate has had this car for 2 years and really hates it. He just wants rid of it so he can order a new car. He cannot Px it.

Car is:

2010 Basic Vauxhall Astra 1.7d (First of the newer shape)
69k
Has a MOT

Needs a service.

I said i didnt want to insult him and i told him the cheapest one on auto trader was 3k with 155k on it. But he sounds like hes happy to take less than that. I dont really need a second car and I agree its a pile of poo, but if its so cheap I feel its worth going for just to use as a work car or just give it to my mum.

What you guys think its worth offering?

Nothing.

If you don't need it, why take on the additional expense of insuring, taxing and running a crap car you never wanted?

Well its handy to have a second car through the winter and when it rains to get to work rather than riding my bike and if i can get it cheap enough its not like im going to lose anything. Also I dont have to pay tax.

I have a new focus ST for something fun to drive so it would just be a commuter or something to stick dirty dogs in the back.

Because the new car he wants is sat on a forecourt in Germany and to PX he would have to take the old one to the UK and then somehow get back to Germany to get his new one. He could PX but hes not willing to go through the hassle of that.

Im thinking 2k. That seem cheap enough?

Why don't you drive your Focus to work when it rains and in the winter? I don't really get keeping a Focus ST as a weekend car. Sure it's a lovely car, but it's hardly like it's a McLaren P1. It's fine to drive everyday and that's it purpose - being quick and exciting whilst also able to knuckle down and do the daily grind.

Do you really want to do the majority of your miles in a car that your friend is getting rid of because he hates, that you've even said you hate ...AND pay for the pleasure of driving said POS?

You drive a Ford Focus - you don't need a Vauxhall Astra as a second car. You've already got an ideal car for going to work in!

i agree. focus st can be economical if drive slow and easy

Im married and we both drive and work. As it is now if its raining or snowing shes going to take the car and I will have to ride the 15 mile round trip. Sorry i should have been clearer that i have a partner that would be using the other car daily.

Having a second car will also keep the miles down on the main one which as we change that regularly it will make that worth more when it comes time to trade it in.

Have you got any input on the price?

Either don't take it or offer £1500 and gauge how close you are from his reaction. Take it from there. :p

What's the condition of it like? Has it got FSH? Anything wrong with it?

Assuming it's in good condition, has FSH (and serviced relatively on time) and has nothing wrong with it and it just needs a service, its worth maybe £4k.

Also, what kind of service does it need? Does it need a cambelt/major service?

Haha just offered him 2k but he said his next door neighbor is interested also. Not going higher than that.

If you genuinely need a second car anyway, then go for it. It's a crap car but if you can get it for 50% of its true value then you could just sell it if you hated it that much and probably make a profit.

Well this is a odd one.

Offered him £2000.

His response:

Give me 1300 euro then you have 700 euro to do any jobs on it

Was shocked but as hes a good mate so ive raised that to 1500 euro.

After a year surely It will be worth more than that.

That shape Astra is far from a terrible car and is worth considerably more than the sums being discussed here.

All sounds a bit odd really.

Wait its not the weird angular one its the newer rounded looking one?

Wow that is actually an insane bargain... Seems very odd now!

Must be a £4K~ car you've just bagged for £1300...

That is frankly silly money if this isn't a complete dog

Is it a mk2 focus you have? If so this is a better car, sell the Ford

Edit just seen its not - pointless keeping this then, sell it for profitssss

He said he just wanted it gone so he can sort out the loan for his new one. Im not complaining though.

So he needs a loan for his next car yet turns down your offer of £2k to counter offer even less?!

Perhaps if he wasn't selling a £4-5k car for 1300 quid he wouldn't need a bank loan for his next car
