As it currently stands i have a gtx 970 and a dell 25" 1440p 60hz monitor

I keep hearing about higher refresh rates being a big deal and wouldnt mind experiancing it for myself!

What would i need to do to achieve say 144hz at 1080p in new games overwatch bf1 etc whilst still maintaining high end settings?

Would i be ok on my current set up with a new monitor? Or will i need to upgrade my gpu aswell?

Also do i need gsync etc? New to this sort of stuff

Thanks!

*i say 1080p as i imagine 1440p at 144hz requires big spending

You might need GTX 1070 for this....If you want to rump up the setting to the top and expect to keep the 120 fps you might need GTX 1080 (you might struggle with the CPU tho at that point)
Expect to pay around £250 for a 1080p 144Hz gsync monitor
Expect to pay around £400 for 1440p 144Hz gsync monitor

I have to say I have suggested 144Hz to many friends and they are like blown away.... so the difference is visible, smoother and nice if your pc can keep up.
Gsync eliminates a bit of a problem with no sync high Hz monitors by changing the frequency to what ever fps you are getting making it extra smooth but you are paying extra for the Gsync in the monitor.

Freesync is cheaper but you will have to go with AMD or use nvidia card that can hit certain fps constantly because nvidia + freesync will not dynamically adjust the Hz on the monitor. It will just work on the frequency you set it.

Depends on your settings. A 970 will still struggle a little either way. Your likely better off going 980Ti or 1070.

980Ti/1070 and 1440p 144hz with reasonable settings. You will notice the difference 1440p-1080p gaming and desktop wise. Up to you as 1440p 144hz panels ain't the cheapest. Especially the ones with G-sync. Worth the cost though in my opinion.

every now and then when i install a new game it defaults to 60hz on my 120hz panel - and i'm like whoa!! whats going on!! 120/144hz is a big difference even with the same fps

980ti sli here and it just about reaches 144hz @1440p with ultra settings - depending on game developer ability.
So if you drop to 1080p and prepared to drop settings you can drop down to a single 980ti easily and relatively cheap at the moment.
Compare the 980ti to current cards to get a feel for what you will get.
Do not listen to the rubbish being spouted about eyes only seeing at 24hz.
Andi.

You don't need to hit 144 FPS to appreciate the higher refresh rate. I was running Bf1 on Ultra and 1080p on a 980 using a g-sync 144hz monitor and was/is so much smoother/fluid than 60hz even if you don't hit the max refresh all the time, Id say it averaged around 110 dipped to 80 and would hit 144 occasionally.

Link to a £250 144hz G-sync monitor?

Do you notice the dips as much around the 120-80 mark if you cant maintain a constant 120? Or is it still smooth enough to barely notice? Maybe its not achievable for me right now

May feel like a downgrade desktop wise going from 1440p back to 1080?

Do you use v sync in games and what sort of fps do you get now?

I thought about doing similar, moving from 1080p 60hz to 144hz. The problem is that I use v sync otherwise I get bad tearing and stutter in games. I know with my 1060 I can't hit 144fps without turning the graphics right down so the best I could hope for is 72fps. I just don't think paying for a new monitor to gain 12fps is worth it. G sync would help and would allow the fps to vary but those monitors cost even more.

I would say you definitely need at least a 1070 to be pushing 144fps at 1080p but if you don't get g sync in the monitor and you use v sync you need plenty of GPU power otherwise it will drop to 72fps which isn't great after buying the new equipment.

I can pretty much max out Overwatch @ 144Hz 1080p with a 970.
Ur current spec should be fine.
Won't be able to max the newest games without a GPU upgrade, but be prepared to drop £300-400 to get a decent upgrade over a 970.

I find the jump from 60Hz to over 100Hz is like night and day, but I dont tend to notice any difference between 100Hz and 144Hz but thats just me.

I would say its totally worth it though, it is probably the most noticeable upgrade I have had in years,
Personally I went for the Dell S2716DG, mostly because I am a huge fan of the build quality in thier monitors compared to some of the others I have had (I'm looking at you LG...)
The only problem is that all monitors with a lower refresh rate from now on will just look awful :D

Currently running it with a GTX 1080 @ 2075Mhz and a 4670k @ 4.5Ghz and its looking great!

970gtx at 144hz will be a good experience.

anything is better than 60hz :D

seriously though its a great upgrade makes 60hz feel like somethings broke :p

I think your current system is fine for trying out 144hz. Im using a 2500k and 980 system and BF4 at 125% res scale, all ultra, 2x msaa (4x seems to cause input lag) I hover around 100fps, if anything its the 2500k holding back the fps. BF1 beta ran around the same as BF4 for me. I dont play Overwatch but its not exactly a demanding game, the 970 should be fine. 2500k will probably be the bottleneck at high fps.

Gsync is worth it but it is pretty expensive for me, especially when I got my 1080p 120hz monitor in 2011 for £180, doesnt really look like good value so its 1440p freesync for me next.

I say your system can last you until next year @ 1080p 144hz then start looking at Zen/Volta/Vega.
