Car recommendation for 18 year old

Pro tip.. if you're running loads of insurance quotes, use a bogus address/email address/phone number until you're near the end of finding the right one.

On moneysupermarket you can untick the phone option, but no way to disable getting emails about quotes.

Ok the MX is out as it's coming in at over £2k, but the Hyundai is about £1200, which isn't terrible (relatively!)

that's pretty good!

she's getting 1700ish for a 2.0 and 1600ish for a 1.6.

that is in london, she is 27yo too.

but here in my area, insurance prices are crazy.

New drivers are usually timid creatures and believe they have a lot less room when manoeuvring than they probably do. A Mondeo would be rather overwhelming I think for a new teenage driver.

Pfft i drove the family estate car when i passed my test at 18 and loved it, friends loved it too as they could actually travel in comfort instead of being crammed in the back of a tiny car.

Also the bigger the car the better the standard equipment so you get stuff like aircon and better stereo with actual sound deadening in the car so your tunes sound mad wikkid like.

MX5 is so expensive to insure, cost significantly more than my 330 did.

'Deo is a good bet

Yeah, mine was also expensive... barely any cheaper than my Clio 172 was. Not sure where this idea that they are cheap to insure has come from. Prices will be laughable for a new driver.

uk 1.6's are reasonable, na's that is.

NB's, 1,8's etc are expensive.. if it's an import you'll be paying through the roof.

I found the MG-TF cheap to insure compared to a number of ordinary hatchbacks. Might be worth a look?

Shame the MX-5 is out of budget really. Try a Toyota MR-2?

Yeah, I think he'd be ok with a bigger car. I had big cars straight from passing my test and never had so much as a scratch. He's a sensible lad and has a bit of road experience (for his age) from being a named driver on our Fiat 500. He has a motorbike too which he's also passed his full test on and has ridden in Europe on a recent trip.

His sister on the other hand I definitely wouldn't trust - no spacial awareness whatsoever - god knows how she passed her test!

You're being pretty sensible there Sagalout, just avoid what immediately comes to your mind as a typical young blokes car.

Play about on insurance sites with various cars he can stomach and see what comes out cheapest. Then try and base the car around the budget he has left over.

You know that insurance is one of those things.. it's cheap for me too after a yearbbut before that it was near 3k

I mean its about as cheap to insure as a 1.6 Golf for me. And considerably cheaper than my Octavia. Was incredibly surprised when I checked!

Well let's be honest, it is not a fast car haha ;) and risk factor is obviously low because most teenage boys literally look for a fancy hatch.. aka corsa, fiesta etc , something mates and mcds car park would approve and mx5 is a hair dressers car

Sames, went from passing in a 1l yaris to an old battered 323f, drank like a fish and moved like a whale but was comfy and took all the abuse i hurled at it for all those years.

Whatever it is, dont make it too good, after a couple of years of inexperienced driving any car will be worse for wear for it, save the nice cars for when the insurance drops, and weild it as a carrot to stop him crashing (ie if you crash you wont be able to get a nice motor for x more years)

I took care of my first car and didn't get a knock or scrape on it, for 18 months, until I impaled it on a tree. :p

Fair enough, everyone is different, some people take to driving like a duck to water but how long ago did you pass? The roads are different now. More cars than ever everywhere, people just abandon their cars when they park far more now making certain streets, towns and car parks much tighter than they ever were several years ago.

As for the stereo and banging tunez, well that's a good point! :D
