So...

I own the X34 and TBH I love it. The fact the odd game isnt able to in in 21:9 isnt ideal but I can live with it. However, I would like the PS Pro and as I dont own a 4k TV nor plan on buying one it would be nice to run it on my monitor. I assume it will probably just run 1080p with the black bars at the side if I try it on my X34 so I'm thinking about selling my current monitor and getting a ROG/Acer Gsync 4k instead.

Just wondered what everyone thinks about this? What would you guys and girls do if you were in my position? Having both is out the question due to funds and desk space so its one or the other I'm afraid. I think the main issue may be going back to a smaller monitor as I'm used to the size of the X34 and love it. Anyone made the same jump and how did it go for you?

You have opened a hornet nest with this one. Personally I prefer 4K as the 1440 is to narrow for me and on a 32" panel as it more immersive compared to 27/28" and with 40" just being to big for in your face desk top gaming.

I've had both m8 and you have to remember that 4k is very VERY taxing on the graphics card. I'd say if you were going for 4k and wanted all the bells and whistles (no AA) then you'll need a minimum of 1080 SLi, whereas with the X34 you can get away with a single 1080 for the same detail (Gsync obviously helps here a bit).

Just something to keep in mind. For me, the ideal current setup for 4k is SLi TXP's, they have the horsepower to keep the frames up :) (and you'll miss 100Hz, believe me) ;)

Me? I just got the Philips 43PUT4900 4k TV as a second screen to cure my 4k cravings and that was only £280! It's pretty stunning (VA) if you have the space

edit - The XB321HK I had was damn good btw, and the only screen I'd switch my X34 for (and I'd go 1080 SLi)

I'm using a 40" 4K Samsung KU6400 TV as my main PC monitor now with a GTX 1070 and am absolutely loving it. Tried about 30 games and a lot of them (mainly older, but some very new ones like Forza and Rocket League) run at 60fps at ultra (Forza Apex is >100fps maxed out) and I just need to turn settings to High and AA to off or low on things like Witcher 3 to get reasonable frame rates. Even then, the games look fantastic :D

Doesn't feel too big at all at 2-3 feet away (in fact it's almost starting to feel a bit small), and I could easily create a 3440x1440 image at 27 inches within it if I want to. Best of all worlds (except >60hz, but those displays are more expensive than this was by quite a bit!)

For future games I expect I'll struggle with the 1070 to max things out, but bang for buck has been incredible on this setup and I would definitely recommend it. Titans or a 1080 would be faster of course, but I have no regrets and don't think the extra cost would be worth it for me at all. Maybe I'll just buy an 1170 next year if I feel like I'm falling behind, but the PC is also connected to a 55" Panasonic VT plasma in my living room so 1080p ultra is another easy option for me on more demanding games.

Same for me tbh Tom, not used my X34 for a bit :D

Absolutely loving the large size, esp for TV eps which I watch a fair bit of

I tested this Philips at 1440p and found it scaled pretty damn well tbh! Better than I was expecting anyhow

It's especially nice for me because I had been occasionally using an old 42" 1080p plasma which was wall mounted next to my old 24" monitor as a gaming screen at the same 2-3 foot distance until it died (8 years old) earlier this year. I had loved using it - Alien Isolation was awesome on it - but having basically the same size now but with pin-sharp images is brilliant! Had planned to run the 4K TV next to the 24" monitor in the same way, but it's been so good I just used it to replace the small monitor! Quite the upgrade!

Cheers Jedi. I have a single 1080 now which I do plan on adding a second so horsepower isnt the issue really. Gsync ,however, is a must going forward in any screen I will buy so the cheaper panels are out of the question

Tbf m8 we're on the precipice of a new generation (with DP 1.3/1.4) so I think it's worth hanging on for 6/9 months and see what comes around :)

Sounds like a plan mate. HDR is something I would rather have as well but we have our first child due in March so its a damn sight easier to justify a big purchase now than it will be once he/she gets here :D

Gone large screen 4K myself, can't beat the Sammy 49" KS9000 for both immersion, style, and doubles as a normal TV. Picture quality is top notch as well rather than the typical PC monitor lottery.

No Gsync though so its a no go for me. At this point I would put Gsync before anything else and its the first box that would need to be ticked

If you get a 43" samsung ks7500 you can have hdr for the PS4 and run the pc in ultrawide 3840 x 1610. Best of both worlds and if pc does hdr your sorted as well.

G-Sync is definitely a must. I just sold on my Acer XB281HK as the whole 4k thing was just getting a bit ridiculous for my liking.

I could run my racing games in at 4k with settings dialed down but my other games such as Just Cause 3 and Far Cry 4 were just bad, I had to dial settings down to minimum and in the end they looked better on my regular Samsung 1440p at highest settings - but I miss the G-sync SO much - especially in F1 2015 and Project Cars, it just made things buttery smooth.

The problem is that I was barely keeping up with these games at 4k and I just don't have the budget to upgrade my 980 to even a 1070 let alone a 1080 so the problem is only going to be compounded when future games got released.

I tried gaming at 1440p on the Acer for a while but that resolution just doesn't scale well on a 4k monitor.

I'm now making do with my Sammy until I can get an affordable 144hz 1440p monitor, how long that will take is a mystery!
