Had a call from my sister telling me her 50inch lg plasma stand snapped, luckily she managed grab hold of the tv to stop it completely crashing down, a bit scary with her 5 year old walking past it numerous times a day.

Anyway called lg but it's out of warranty, at a guess it's 2 years old, lg say it's not their problem, either the tv has been near a heat source (which it hasn't been nowhere near) or the screws were over tightened.

I just wanted to see what you guys thought of this, should lg be doing more about this or does she have to take it on the chin and buy a new stand off lg which is going cost well over £50 if they can find one. Take a look at the picture where the holes have failed :)

Cheers

Looks like plastic tat o.o i would have NEVER put a tv on that in the first place it would have been put right in the bin.

I would be all over LG for that pal to be honest. As you said Child + Large TV + mavity + Poorly manufactured stand = bad.

Consider posting on other avforums threads where they may have specific threads for that tv model - to see if others have seen similar

would send pictures to LG email help even find ceo's email (maybe pictures of part it broke away from too - assume the bit we are looking at was connected horizontally ?) saying that you had received unsympathetic response from call and that good's should be fit for purpose ... so at a minimum want a replacement stand.

Cheers guys I think it's worth pursuing for a free replacement as the stand should be higher quality than this and should be over engineered if anything :)

I'd have thought it should be engineered to hand by 1 bolt and the rest are just backups. Plasmas are a bit heavier than LCD screens but I'm surprised it failed, had it fallen on her child I suspect a large lawsuit would be heading lg's way. I thought all stands had tabs at the top as well to hold it even without bolts.

Well she spoke to a guy at lg today called Chris, he said it's the companies decision that the screws were over tightened and that decision won't change and take it to trading standards if she has too, she said he was proper cocky and she asked to speak to someone higher up and he said he was the team leader of tv and media.

She said what qualifies as over tightening and he said well when you can't screw no more to which she replied well you can't over tighten it then? And surely it would have failed earlier if attaching it to the stand had damaged it.

I'm pretty annoyed for her they have been like this, I own a lg tv, surround sound, washer, fridge, phone and watch! Let's hope I never have any issues with them!

Of to trading standards it is then :)

In theory weight would be down the vertical axis, it wouldn't tip unless it was not on a flat surface, or it was subject to strong enough heat that would cause the plastic to soften, screen to tilt etc. Plasma TV's give off a fair bit of heat - my parents old one heats the room as I found out when I went to install a satellite receiver recently and made the mistake of putting my head over the top vent. Now, that pic looks like it was taken in a window, we've had a hot week and the hottest day in 50 years was yesterday. It may just be me, but those dot's seem like they could possibly join up?

I asked her to put the stand in natural light ie the window as her (ironically) lg Leon camera is crap :) it normally sits out of sunlight and opposite side of the room to a radiator.

I'd be taking it to trading standards or at least E-Mailing them, just because of how LG has handled it. I'd also argue that it could have hit my child because of faulty product, not only that but how did I over tighten it, which is LG's main excuse.

LG wont want to know even if its out of warranty a week,Having experienced this myself..they simply dont care,Its as if its too much hassle for them to keep a customer happy. (even though i said id pay fully)

Could you not buy an aftermarket monitor stand?.Does that Plasma have VESA compatibility- 200x200 to 600x400?

Spotted a decent looking aftermarket stand on the rainforest for £39.99 that suports up to 60",Or one with a wider base for £49.

I really don't know, I've managed get her an email address for someone higher up in lg so she's going send a polite email and we will see what happens :)

Keep pushing them on this!

I'd also get a spirit level on the unit the TV sits on, it could be that the TV has been leaning slightly forward for the last two years putting extra strain on the stand.

I think you'll struggle to get them to play ball with this. As it's out of warranty, you'd have to prove the fault existed when the item was purchased. As it's not a "regular" working part, i'm not sure how anyone could prove otherwise.

By all means go via TS, but i suspect they'll tell you something similar.
