Garage asking for money for a service they did a month a go!

My local garage will do the work and let me come away and pop back within 28 days to pay up.

Depends on your relationship with the garage, used them for years and as they used to joke they know where I live anyway.

I find it hard to believe that a Honda garage would let a customer walk out with their vehicle without paying or without providing an invoice for the work done, which points to this being a problem on their end, rather than the OP trying to get away with not paying.

But then if the OP's girlfriend did pay, they would have almost certainly given her a receipt regardless of how she paid.

Both sides don't add up.

Just tell the garage that after thinking about it you remember paying in cash, and after checking your accounts you can see the cash withdrawal shortly before the service commenced. Then mention about surely they wouldn't have given the keys back had the service not been paid for.

Would this not depend also if say the car is on finance from Honda? They'd technically have her details and address so.may have sent the bill at a later date ?

Since when did garages do work then pass you your car keys back and let you walk out only to send out an invoice weeks later....?

I've never experienced this with any garage from big main dealers to small indies that will do small jobs for cash etc.

I have a theory. the garage thought it may be a free service? part of a the original purchase maybe? given the keys to your girlfriend and not asked for the money so she just walks way not questioning it then a few weeks later the garage looks back at the records and finds the mistake. just a longshot.

Depends on the garage. The specialist who deals with mines normally give me an invoice to settle but the amounts are normally quite high and ive got a good relationship with them. Other garages dont give you the keys until youve put cash in their hands, even main dealers.

What a curious tale. I find it hard to believe someone doesn't know where their money has gone and wouldn't be able to track it down. Surely IF you paid by cash then one of you will have transaction records. Maybe you drew out the correct amonut, maybe you drew out in excess because you needed some magic beans. Do the deductions and you'll find it.

Garage is mostly to blame though for releasing a vehicle potentially without payment. Ask them if it's standard practice for them to do so, if it isn't then you must have paid.

Struggling to believe how you paid, I can still remember handing over the cash to a garage which serviced my car close to 10 year ago! Although more recently I now pay on the credit card!

Read the thread, there are plenty of garages that do this. Just because you've never experienced it, doesn't mean it's not common practise.
