Dell U2515H - Vertical Red Line

Over the past month or so a vertical red line has been showing on the right hands side of my screen. All my drivers are up to date (980ti) and I have tried 4 display port cables (including the mini one that I got with the monitor) all with the same result. I have done several factory resets but it always comes back. I have gone through the monitor self test and the line doesn't show up when the cable is disconnected. I tried to take a screenshot but the line didn't show up in it so I had to take a photo to send to Dell.

If I wiggle the cable at the monitor end the line goes on and off but always comes back. It stays on more now so I have initiated an RMA through Dell, my monitor is about 15 months old now so still within warranty. However, Dell are now saying I need to try another monitor which I don't have access to.

Is my GPU up the swanny instead of the monitor?

Just put the hdmi cable in and so far so good so will just have to wait and see.

Could be a bit of a schoolboy error here but I'm man enough to own up if it is!

I tried the DP cable in another DP port and so far no red line. There's 3 DP connections on my MSI 980ti and I thought they were all the same? Might have put it in a different port after cleaning it last month so will wait out and see if it re-occurs.

Well that didn't last long, the red line is back again. I've put the hdmi cable in now to see if that helps. I still reckon it's the monitor DP connection though.

Have you tried another type of cable? I would just tell dell you tried another monitor and RMA it.

I put the hdmi cable in yesterday and have had no problems with it. I know I could use hdmi but what happens if I want to add another monitor and use the DP connection again? Looks like another email back to Dell.

Famous last words - the red line is back when using hdmi.

Inbetween hangovers I've done some more troubleshooting. I hooked the monitor up to my htpc and had no red line using hdmi. Within 5 mins of being plugged back into my normal pc the red line was back. So, now I'm beginning to think it might be my gpu that's at fault. There are no artifacts just the red line on the screen. Are there any gpu tests I can do to see if it is the gpu? I just need to make sure I RMA the right piece of kit.

I would think if it was GPU fault you'd have more than just a red line.

Was the same HDMI cable used when testing monitor on HTPC?

No,it was a different cable I used. I'll just get back to Dell again and see if I can't put a rush on with the RMA. Do we have a Dell Rep on the forums at all?

This is almost certainly a panel fault.

A faulty cable is not going to cause a vertical red line on a monitor.

I suppose there's a slight chance it could be a GPU fault, but a perfect vertical red line seems much more likely to be the panel.

When the red line appears, have you tried removing the cable to see if it stays on the screen ? If the monitor blanks out due to lack of input signal, try bringing up a menu with the monitor controls.

Put the monitor back onto the htpc and left it for several hours and the red line came on, I unplugged the cable and the line stays on through the monitor self test this time so now I know it's not the gpu (tried 2 now). I took some photos and have emailed them back to Dell asking them to just sort out a replacement for me. I thought Dell CS was good but now I've used it so far that doesn't seem the case, I'll keep you posted as to how I get on.

It probably appears when screen heats up and edge contact for this column loses connection due to thermal movement.

But it will probably not appear if you switch monitor on without signal - because without signal backlight (which causes heating) will not switch on.

I am using an MSI 980Ti and I have three screens all connected to each of the DP ports on the card and no issues ... I would think its the panel ....

It is, they've finally accepted my photos of the line as proof for a replacement. Just waiting for them to let me know when it's going to be sent.
