What sort of performance hit would I get at 1080p using a 980Ti by moving my card down from the x16 slot to a x8 slot? (purely for cooling purposes in the case)

I'm finding that when playing battlefield the gpu is dumping a lot of heat near the cpu cooler which loops warmer and warmer until BSOD due to heat.

I moved my previous card which was 970 down to my second slot. no ill affects at all. still got the same frames per second in all the games.

your card is more powerful but I doubt it would have any effect you would notice.

I did try to find the answer searching around but most folk said similar to the above.

That board should do x16 x16, so shouldn't need to use a x8 slot.

Have you got the reg hack in place for pcie 3?

The same. Might even go up! I joke but when you look at benchmarks on differing slots, x16 isn't always the highest but it's so close can only be put down to testing variation.

As the MSI dumps hot air in the case the cooler is just above it and it's sucking in a fair bit of heat off the gpu. The front intake fans I now have blow air but the both fans blow cool air just under the gpu, in its current position, so doesn't do a lot. If I was to drop it a slot down then the two front fans would be blowing directly over it and could help me with temps.

Modding the case with the two front fans has dropped the cpu temps nicely but the gpu on full oad is causing a few issues

so what about extraction you've not mentioned that. If there is an outtake fan adjacent the CPU cooler where most are you shouldnt get
which loops warmer and warmer until BSOD due to heat.

can you post a pic of your case inside because nearly every internal layout I know has the same GPU below the CPU (apart from the upside down ones etc) so I find it peculiar what you are saying.

I would question the word "modding" does your case not have the standard front and back case fan mounts ? Ah just seen you have a 600t. You mean you didnt have case fans in the front mounts before !?!!

Air circulation man air circulation ! ;) If you are struggling to keep things cool in a 600t you must be doing something wrong. There is one rear fan mount and two roof mounts so plenty of options for extraction and cooler air blowing on the CPU without having to move the GPU.

Here is the recent case mod build with pics. You can see the cooling I have

2 front fans - 120mm Corsair AF
1 rear fan - 120mm Corsair AF
2 roof fans on the radiator blowing out the top - 120mm Corsair SP fans

I had a single 200mm fan in the front before but modded it to two 120mm AF fans.

I think this is your problem below nothing to do with GPU placement.
You need Fan Filters. LOL. Your setup shouldnt have a build up of heat causing BSOD with 3 fans extracting from the case (1 rear and 2 radiator)
I would be tempted to have the rear as an intake too and have it all exhaust out the top two.

Before I moved over to the red ringed 120 AF fan I had a 120mm bitfenix as an intake to blow cool air directly into the path of the two radiator fans.

I'm going to try moving the GPU down to the next x16 slot as mentioned above. This will put it directly into the path of the dual front fans blowing cool air over the GPU.

If that doesn't work I'll move the rear from an exhaust to an intake and run with it that way. Not the way I wanted it but we'll see how it goes.
