Recently I was asked to recommend some windproof clothing to a friend that has gone to study in Canada. My go to brand has been Berghaus but I soon realised that it is not available in Canada.

Can anyone recommend any brands or products that are available in Canada/North America. Retailers too if possible.

Many thanks.

Can't you post stuff for them? There will be no doubt a lot of great quality stuff in Canada due to the climate. And also a lot of stupid stuff to sell to them bloody immigrants!

North Face, Patagonia, erm... Pretty much every normal brand. :p (or at least the large North American brands you see in the UK.)

Only real difference is MEC (Mountain Equipment Coop) is a big thing here. I think it has a nominal membership fee (like $10).

Canada goose is widely available, but it's not really waterproof gear and is ridiculous expensive (and pretty much overkill unless you're working outside in midwinter.

EDIT: Just realised OP said wind proof, not waterproof...:o

Go to North Face, Moutain Equipment Co-Op (MEC), Canada Goose, etc.

Ideally, if you are going to be in the crappier parts of this country, weather wise, you should have a heavy duty down-filled parka with a goretex outer shell. This will protect you from extreme cold, high winds, moisture, etc, while still alowing your skin to breathe.

There was a time when Eddie Bauer was unmatched for their Goretex Parkas. I was outside in -40 celsius for a couple of hours on a school trip in my Eddie Bauer Goretex parka when I was 11 and I was actually feeling kind of hot. Other kids were complaining that they were frickin' freezing but I was fine.

TBH the OP was a bit light on details so mid range is probably fine...

Clothing needs/wants are going to be very different depending on whether the friend is living in Toronto and needs a jacket to wander between buildings, or if they are living in Edmonton and hiking in midwinter.

Layers, layers and more layers.

Send your friend to any decent outdoor clothing store and they'll take care of him/her.
