Hi guys,

Just got myself a new rig and feel like I should be upgrading from my 4 year old 1080p screen to a 1440p 27" to give it what it deserves.

Im not really up to date with monitors and dont know a great deal. I know the disadvantages between TN and IPS and what gsync offers etc but havent had a chance to do enough research.

Anyone recommend me anything?
I have no budget really, just looking for some input from others.

I've been looking in the same area but specifically IPS. Very few monitors and all £600+ which I'm not sure I can justify. I really don't know how good TN Film panels are these days but the prices are much more reasonable...

My thoughts exactly.

The S2716DG is really good for a TN panel once you've found a calibrated ICC profile like the one from TFT Central. Its not quite as good as an IPS, but its pretty damn close and you don't get the downsides that come with IPS. For gaming the 144hz and 1ms response is fantastic.

It is expensive at the moment though, I got mine from B Grade for £330 and it was on offer around £400 a couple of months ago. I feel the prices may have risen just due to its popularity.

I would try and go IPS if the budget can allow at all. I am not a TN hater by any means but I recently just sold on my Acer Predator 4k TN and I'll fully admit for a TN it was pretty damn good but it just wasn't an IPS. I wanted to like it, I tried, but in the end the little niggles just get to you!

What about the PG278Q?

I have been looking at this quite extensively and looks like a very good monitor.

I have that Monitor ( B-Grade) , had it just two days...so still kinda messing about with the settings and stuff..but I have noticed a boost in my frame rates in BF4 hitting around 190 @2560x1400 (ultra settings )most times .

I did have some flickering on the monitor ...but took the DP lead out...put it back in and the flickering has gone :)

TN film isn't it? It caught my eye too but I do like to mess around with taking photos so consider colour reproduction important and the viewing angle problem worries me with that.

@Xire:
If you don't mind going for 1080p, then there's the Acer Predator Z271 for £450, and the Acer Predator Z35 for £620 (2560x1080, 21:9). But if you want 1440p (or 4k), then there are:
AOC AGON AG271QG (£580)
Acer Predator XB271HU (£600)
ASUS ROG Swift PG27AQ (£680) (4k)

I'm only listing IPS/VA monitors, as I personally wouldn't recommend TN, especially on anything larger than 24". And I would indeed recommend going 27" or bigger. For IPS vs. TN, check this video and make your own mind. At the time of video, that was pretty much the best TN available (possibly still is?), and it's compared to an IPS counterpart of that particular monitor.

Ps. Just to make sure: When you said "new rig", and asked for G-Sync monitors, I'm assuming you have an nVidia card? Because if you have an AMD card, then you should be looking at the FreeSync monitors, which would also be quite a bit cheaper, and you'd even have more options.

I do like the look of that Acer predator IPS. Yep im running a 1070.

Thanks for the input all.

Why is there so much monitor tech! its exhausting.

After a morning of looking Im thinking of sticking with a TN panel for gaming and have been looking at the Dell S2716DG

I have just ordered the Samsung C27F591 27, not a great monitor panel wise, but its Freesync and it will go great with my silver case and keyboard. Plus surly it has tobe better then my Hanns G 27" quality wise

Im guessing Vsync has to be turned off for Freesync to work?

I've decided to sit tight for now. Not happy with going to TN film and the backlight bleed and other issues with the 27" IPS range seems to be a lottery if you get a good one. At that price point it shouldn't be if.

I'm trying to get hold of an Acer XB271HU(to try out) it seems no one's got any stock(at least no one that I can't be sure hasnt got the old firmware). Just to add to the confusion they have an TN panel with exactly the same name just with an A at the end being released soon. I'm beginning to think even the manufactures are giving up with these 144hz ips technology.

As I mentioned above, a lot of XB271HU had pretty bad issues with firmware, causing "pseudo-split" appearing at center of screen. This caused quite a big outcry, and lot of retailers stopped stocking them until Acer fixes the issue (I am not aware of any official recall and Acer was actually shockingly bad dealing with issue).

I went for the Dell, hated it.

Went for the Asus IPS, no backlight bleed and no dead pixels or anything. Great monitor :)

I wasn't keen on spending that much on a monitor, but for the sake of £100 or so more, figured I'd get something I'm happy with rather than thinking "what if".
