Which GTX 1070?

Hello.

I currently have an EVGA 970 4GB card and am looking to upgrade to the 1070, but with so many card brands, models and prices it is hard to decide which one to opt for.

Should I just stick with EVGA? Are other brands better than EVGA? What model EVGA? There are like 5 models that are all in the same price bracket!.

My gaming habits:
Fallout 4, FIFA 17 when its out.
I game on a 4K monitor but at 1920x1080
Highly unlikely I am going to ever use VR

Also, does anyone have first hand experience in going from a 970 to a 1070 and how big a leap it was in performance boost?

Thank you!

Love my EVGA 1070 SC. Great build quality and really quiet. Stick with EVGA :)

I went from a 780 which is slightly slower than a 970 and the difference is huge.

Not personal experience but I've seen people post there is a considerate gain in performance from 970 to 1070. Just waiting for this months last Friday and I'll be jumping on board the 1070 train.

If I were you I'd go for the Zotac AMP - That's what i'm eyeing up.

The GTX 1070 is almost twice as fast as a GTX 970, so the difference is huge.

The EVGA SC is probably one of the best 1070's overall. It is reasonably priced and has the quietest 2-slot cooler, along with EVGA's good warranty.

If you want to go as quiet as possible with a beastly cooler, look at the Palit Super Jetstream and Gamerock Premium. Downsides are it's a 2 year warranty instead of 3, and it's a 2.5-slot cooler.

Zotac AMP Extreme looks to be the best at cooling, but its massive and a not that cheap, has long 5 year warranty.

Palit Gamerock or Jetstreams are big as well and one of the top coolers, cheaper but less warranty.

EVGA SC or FTW are again not that cheap, 2 slot cooler that performs well but not as well as the bigger ones, apparently have the very good customer support and middle of the road with 3 year warranty.

FPS wise they will all perform within a couple of FPS of each other, mainly the difference is how good the coolers are and the warranty/customer service. Don't bother with Founder's Editions.

Also, does anyone have first hand experience in going from a 970 to a 1070 and how big a leap it was in performance boost, due to the 970's limitations?

Thank you!

It's a big boost, not quite double the performance but a big difference achieving way smoother fps using higher IQ.

Went 970 Ssc+ to an Amp Extreme while the Evga card was quiet but you still heard it, you don't know the Amp Extreme is even there-but it is positevely huge@~33cm long and 3 slots high.

There isn't much in most 1070's, you're paying for cooling/build quality/CS now.

As far as I am aware, Zotac's RMA centre is in SE Asia. So if you had to send your card away, you would have to wait 4 weeks and pay a hefty amount for shipping. EVGA has a UK RMA centre, so shipping would be a lot less and would be faster. I have read many times of people sending off their broken card on monday and receiving a fixed/new card on Friday the same week. I guess it depends on how much annoyance 1 month without a GPU would be for you. Also, you can upgrade EVGA warranties to 5 years or even longer.

Normally you just pay for shipping back to where you bought it from, then they deal with it from there. That was the case with my Palit 980Ti anyway. You are correct on the time period though, from me sending off to receiving a refund was nearly 4 weeks.

Had a Zotac die on me before and turnaround to refund was about 3-4 days, it was collected by the retailer at no charge to myself and sent to Zotac who afaik have a UK centre-but it's not available direct by end customers.

Problem being is no one knows, it's cloudy with Zotac and others, where as with Evga, it's top notch CS, if that's what decides a purchase there's only one winner imo.

Thank you for the responses.

I think I will stick with EVGA then. Just remember actually my card before the 970 was an EVGA. Can't remember what it was but I had it for like 6 years and it never failed me.

Thanks again.

Went for Palit Jetstream. Fans don't kick in at all till it gets warm. Cheap and warranty is ok. Nice LED showing temperature state/rainbow/breathing, and massive, great looking card.

Good choice :)

Wouldn't look at anything but the Zotac Amp Extreme :p

I looked at the Zotac Amp Extreme, and looked at the dimensions of my case (a decent size mid tower). I then chose a Palit card, as I didn't want to buy a new case or start cutting pieces out of the one I already own.

The Palit card seems to be a good one.

I really don't want to jump on a 1070 but AMD don't look like they are close to that performance and price any time soon.

Can't beat EVGA. Just don't go for a blower cooler. Make sure you pick one with a couple of fans.
