Hi guys. Need some advice on a situation my Dad has with his car.

My dad put his car through it's MOT on Monday. He took it to Halfords....It is a 2009 hyundai he bought for about 4k I think a few years back, and they want £750, saying loads of stuff needs replacing. He has already agreed to pay it. He rang me just now(cause he needs me to give him a lift there when he picks it up) to say that Halfords have been in contact saying one of the parts they have ordered will take a week to be delivered! AFAIK they haven't done any work on it yet.

My question is, is it too late for him to say he will take it somewhere else as they have already ordered the parts?...He is retired and could do without that big a bill, so if I could save him some it would be great! I'm not great with this sort of stuff and I honestly have no idea where we stand. I imagine they would still charge him a fair amount as the car has been in there for a few days?

Cheers

Where are you based? Maybe someone on here can recommend a decent place in the area.

You will no doubt have countless users telling you to do all of the work yourself with a spanner and a corkscrew, for £8.50 :D

We are in Brighton I've only had a car for 3 years, and it has sailed through all the MOTs so far. I don't really have much experience with this stuff.

i'd be checking what the fail sheet says and get a 2nd opinion if they're asking £750 to fix stuff. If they have already failed it, download the vehicle smart app which has a thread here, put in the registration number and the make and it'll bring up the MOT history and will show what it failed on.

Bloody hell...Loads of stuff according to that!

And apparently half of the stuff is advisory, which he just agreed for them to do. I have contacted someone I vaguely know who is a mechanic to get his thoughts.

Id be telling them to jog on tbh

tell them you can be without the vehicle for a week and have no choice but to take it elsewhere.

My money is on a lot of the avisories being negligble and perhaps a couple of fails on parts that could be sourced same day from ECP.

Im sure someone on here had Halfords say they needed new discs and pads.
With the ones that were on had only just been fitted lol

Halfords are such a crap company to use. Ive never heard one good thing about the servicing, or mots.

Pick the car up, and take it to someone else, checkatrade etc will show good nearby ones.

I would take it somewhere else. Had a similar thing myself. Garage said £400 worth of work needed. Took it to another garage and paid for an mot and passed with no advisories.

Go figure

Advisory is just that, they are taking him for a mug, go elsewhere and pay to fix whatever it fails on nothing more.

Looking through my Volvo's MOT history, it's had advisorys for corroded rear springs for the last four years, yet still passed each time.

No advisories last year I'd be questioning it. My brakes lasted 96000 miles before I replaced them and the tyres have been on the car for at least 2 years etc and nowhere near the minimum tread for example. If it is bulbs etc for brakelights - local MPD or ebay, check google and do it yourself.

I'm in Fontwell, BN18. Bit of a distance, but here if you get stuck!

Stick the failure sheet up, or supply the reg so we can have a look

Best one i had was a mention of corrosion ( as an advisory) on the exhaust for two MOT's running on my old Octy VRS, then at the next one after that no mention of it all and no advsirories.

Funny that :p - The rust must have cured itself.
