Hi all,

Looking to finish up a budget build for my GF and looking at these two for the gpu.

She'll be on 1080p and mainly play league of legends but would like to give her extra headroom just in case she starts playing other games.

What's the best one to go for?

Assuming all the 7970's havn't been flogged to death Ethereum mining :) then yep that one especially with that extra GB of VRAM.

I had up till very recently a GTX 670 + i5 3570K and that was fine running most of the popular race sim games on a 2560 x 1080 monitor at 60 fps.

If she is mostly playing league of legends then find out what that runs best on - otherwise go for whatever has the most VRAM.

Plenty of 4gb GTX 680s about so that kills your argument.:D

Plenty of 6gb 7970's about so that kills your argument.:p

The 7950 is faster than a 680:p and the 70 can go head to head with a Titan because of GCN.

The 7970 was always the faster card oc v oc after they sorted out the performance available 6 months after launch on the beta drivers.

There are a lot more 4gb 680s and 770s. A 6gb 7970 is a rare sight.

Which is as moot as Kaap's point, the op's obviously looking for the cheapest gpu in that pp-that more than likely rules out 4/6Gb gpus as the 3/2Gb will always be cheaper unless you get very lucky.:)

Yep and the 680 only wins in benchmarks like 3dmarks or heaven benchmark as its build for nvidia.

680 still comes out on top in many DX11 games - though stuff based on the Dawn or Snowdrop engines the 7970 can be 60-100% faster. We've not really seen how things are gonna shape up in properly developed DX12/Vulkan engines (Dawn engine especially is a bit meh) but I suspect the GCN architecture will have an edge there - that said I wouldn't be buying either with the intention of playing next gen games now.
