advice with insurance and hitting a wing mirror

You have indeed completely misunderstood how they rob you. Anything mentioned to an insurer is used against you whether it cost them anything or not.

I know that it may impact future premiums, but the first post specifically mentioned a loss of No Claims Discount, which I didn't think was the case unless there was actually a paid claim against your policy?

Considering I work for a motor insurer, you'd think I would know this stuff :(

Ah yes I missed that bit you're correct NCD shouldn't be effected if the claim isn't actually progressed.

If he claims against your insurance they will just pay out as its nothing to them. They will then hike up your premiums.

If the bloke just has normal insurance it would be much better for him as well to just settle outside of the insurance. You will both have a fault on your claims experience (so may/may not affect you) but that would be much better than him claiming for something so inexpensive.

I have never had any dealing with an insurance company and been made to feel that they are on your side.

Only in the business to make money, they're definitely not on your side!

And at the end of the day why should they be, they're a business purely there to make money.

No business will do anything nice for a customer unless they get something out of it be that good publicity or repeat business neither of which insurance companies need as they know we've go no choice if we chose to ride/drive.

it sounds like either way we're screwed now. is there any point in trying to convince the guy to drop the claim if i go deliver the cash for repairs etc, or is it now past the point of no return?

Have your insurance been contacted?

If not it's worth contacting him direct and getting him to ring up his and cancel the claim (assuming he accepts your offer to pay) but if they have then I'm afraid it's more than likely going to go against you as they know there was a possible claim against you.
