Hello, you may have already seen my recent issue

https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18751822

Unless I can sort this one (not looking likely) im looking into building something new...

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £728.48
(includes shipping: £10.50)

What processor would you recommend please?

I will retain my exitsing PSU

Will my cosair H100i cooler stil fit a 2011 processor?

Would I be better off saving money on the M/B and go for something not quite as high spec?

As im a little out of touch now, would I be better off getting a cpu with more cores and less speed or more speed and less cores? Im not a massive gamer, but do expect to see everything running super smooth, and im impatient so dont like waiting for things to load up etc.

For gaming you'd be better off saving a shedload of cash and going with a Skylake build: 6700k CPU, sub £200 Z170 motherboard & 16GB RAM @ 3200MHz. Add in a decent M.2 drive for Windows & a normal SSD to store games on and you're good to go!

ok, sounds good, all for saving a bit of money:) how overclockable are the Skylakes?

What board and ram do you all suggest please?

I'd go for a bundle such as this. RAM wise Skylake is dual channel so for 16GB you'd be better off going 2 x 8GB rather than 4 x 4GB, and this would also leave you 2 spare slots for future upgrades. Most people say the current sweet spot (price / performance) for Skylake is 3000MHz but personally I'd go for 3200MHz as it's not much dearer and will easily add a few FPS in some games.

They're not too bad for overclocking so long as you get a 'K' model as shown, as the non 'K' CPU's have locked multipliers. From what I've seen on here they also respond well to de-lidding and replacing the stock TIM with something better quality. Not tried it myself but results others have achieved make this look very tempting!

Haha brilliant, while I was writing my reply you managed to post an identical spec :D

Go with the bundle deal though for another few quid saving :)

before I do this, would there be any benfit from using this m/b ...Asus Maximus VIII Formula ?? The Overclocked bundles seem to use this one???

Not really, I'm using the Asus Z170 Maximus VIII Hero with a 6700k and not had any problems. You'll hit a brick wall with the CPU needing too much voltage long before the motherboard gets close to being an issue. Put the extra cash towards a decent GPU or have a holiday, top line motherboards are massively overpriced for the tiny benefits :)

thanks thats good advice, just recently purchased a 1080GTX, so GPU wont be an issue:)

have you managed to get yours running 4.8Ghz??

And would this build benefit from a quad Chanel ram setup?

Have mine clocked at 4.5 currently but it would easily run 4.7 and possibly 4.8. Kept it at 4.5Ghz as it seemed like the right trade-off between performance and temperature / noise. Can run lower end games without the fans ever coming on and they only spin up to about 900rpm when playing things like Project Cars now, so happy leaving it at 4.5 :)

No benefit at all going quad channel on Skylake as it's only a dual channel controller, so better off sticking with the dual channel and leaving 2 slots free in case you want to add more RAM in the future.

Mine with a 980Ti will run nearly everything completely maxed out, so with a 1080 you should be able to smash any game thrown at it :)

Just read your build thread on your current mahcine! Cracking......looks well smart...I was never brave enough to go down the road of water cooling like that:)

Thanks a lot, was my first go at it so definitely a bit nerve racking filling it up for the first time praying it didn't leak everywhere. When the pump description states "Maximum flow: 1500L/h" all that was going through my head as the switch was flicked the first time was "Christ I hope I remembered to do everything up tight...!" :)

Surprised me how easy it was to do though, especially using soft tubing. Only real issue is the cost of it all. Kind of expect radiators to be expensive but when they're charging £5 for every fitting it soon gets a bit out of hand :/

Go on enlighten me, how much did the build cost in total? if you dont mind me asking that is..

I really couldn't say as I bought the parts gradually and from numerous different places, so never kept a close eye on what it came to in the end. Inexperience with watercooling definitely added to the bill though, changing both radiators, front fans, coolant, tubing etc after changing plans and buying incompatible parts was both silly and expensive! Still, compared to the one in planning at the moment it could end up looking like a bit of a bargain... :D :(

Definitely worth it though, it'll fly through any game at that spec with a 1080 and with 1TB of super fast storage it should last you ages without needing a penny spent on it :)
