I don't think so. I think people are comparing these prices with what other companies sell their phones for. These prices are higher than LG,Samsung Huawei and HTC sell phones for.
I've just looked at my Nexus 6p order, £579 so the XL is £240 more expensive and its not a upgrade IMHO.
Smaller screen, no front speakers, 10% better CPU/memory
