Would probably be able to get a used 3770k for £150 ish, then sell my 2500k to offset the cost.

The thinking is that this is the best cpu my board can take and will also give me pcie 3 as my board is gen 3. So I may get a little more performance from my 1070 too.

Worth the hassle or not?

I'm thinking if it only ends up costing me £70 or so it is possibly worth doing.

Hunting down a 3770k for a reasonable price may take a while though. They are fairly rare it seems.

Not sure with your board, but you may find it needs a bios update for the ivy chip.
I bought a 3570k recently and needed to test it worked before i hunted down a rare 1155 itx board. The problem i had with my z68 is that it would support an ivy but max multi for the 3570k was x38. I'd have to modify with a uefi bios to get full overclocking support for ivy, which would bugger up my 2600k.
In the end i didn't bother but your board might have better support.

I thought about it but think maybe just waiting until the end of next year for Cannon Lake and save the money for it was the best way to go although you'd see more benefits than me. Have you tried to overclock the 2500k further? I thought 4.5ghz was rather easy with any 2500k even the bad ones?

Ah thats unlucky, must have a bit of a dud. Hopefully you will get lucky with the 3770k and get a good clocker this time and get a nice upgrade.

I think 4.5ghz is pretty average for the 2500k though? Some will do a lot higher though granted. I have seen a few at 5ghz, although some pretty extreme voltages and cooling were involved.

Yeah 4.5 aint bad, i was going from your sig which said 4.3 before, 1.33v is fine for a sandybridge so i wouldnt worry about that voltage.

Yeah for air i wouldnt go much higher, if 1.33 is required for 4.5 i would think 1.39-1.4 would be what youre looking at for 4.6. On water that might be worth a go but using air i would probably leave it at 4.5.
