Really cant get on with a phone that is much bigger than 5" but it appears all of the flagship phones are 5.5"+ size screens.

Can anyone help me out by telling me what the best phones are that are 5" and under?

Is it still things like the Sony Z5 Compact/X Compact or is there anything else out there which has top end specs but isn't a whopper size?

Ah, I always assumed Samsung's flagship phones to be 5.5". 5.1" is potentially do'able providing it isn't really long. Think I need to have a mooch to a shop to check one out!

Are there any others to have a goosey at?

Don't focus too much on the screen size, look at the dimensions of the phones, as some have better screen to bezel ratios.

I just moved from a 5" to a 5.2" screen, however the phone is only 5mm longer and I don't feel it is too big (unlike the 5.5" Umi Iron I tried in the past).

This. As the person above said, the S7 and 6S are nearly the same size, but it's more because iPhones are known for their big bezels, not because the S7 is so small.

I just went from a 5" phone to a 5" phone and the new one is actually smaller.

Personally, I'd definitely go Pixel over Samsung (cannot stand Touchwiz).

Other phones:
- iPhone SE if you want iOS
- HTC 10 // 5.2"
- Huawei P9 // 5.2"
- Xiaomi Mi 5S if you don't mind buying a Chinaphone and your carrier supports 4G on it // 5.15"

as mentioned above, look at dimensions rather than screen size as some devices have a thin bezel with a bigger screen.

Pixel looks great but is way too expensive.

The Z5 Compact on O2 Like New isnt a bad deal at £180 however they only had a yellow one in yesterday lol, black was OOS.

I like the look of the Chinese phones but cant be bothered with the faff of MIUI or having to put global roms on to get rid of the Chinese stuff loaded on etc.

Anandtech review is out, and it's screen calibration is terrible.
Yes, but it's tricky to know how that affects the user because terrible calibration probably just means unrealistic colours. I have huawei p9 and it is also calibrated towards over saturation.

A reviewer on youtube said that he prefers the screen on the P9 than the one on the htc 10 and he also likes the screen on the honor 8. Another reviewer said, subjectively, that huawei are really good at calibrating their screens.

What I assume is, these reviewers like how the colours "pop", even though it is an artificial look.

The anandtech review also said that the honor 8's screen is a "quality panel", but as you say, a "terribly calibrated" one but I think that was an objective point of view based on their screen tests rather than a subjective one.

I like the over saturated colours on my P9, just say'n.

Now that I'm more into photography than I was a few years ago, I like all my displays to be sRGB accurate. Just a preference of mine.

I also settle for nothing less than OLED on my phones, that itself gives extra pop thanks to immense contrast.

That's fair enough, photography is a good reason to go for accurate colours :)
