Facebook Secret Messaging

Whatsapp been doing it for ages.

More importantly, have they just admitted what we always knew? Old messenger was able to be therefore likely was being monitored by FB.

Well, yeah, they will have been able to read your messages, just like Google can probably read your emails in Gmail (don't quote me on that, I don't know if Google encrypt your mail account, don't think they do). Don't think they ever claimed they couldn't?

I'm not a Facebook user but this reads like a free for all for illegal / terrorist type activity if any messages can't be collected by the security services or police for later, forensic investigation. Maybe I'm just showing my ignorance?

Someone loves 1984.

WhatsApp is encrypted, and I believe there's apps out there where a message you send will self destruct after so many seconds if that floats your boat. Don't think this is news. :p

Its more that huge numbers of cheating oartners use facebook.

Terrorists are so laughabky small they arent an issue.

Also just remeber this.

The Paris attackers use plain old fashioned completely unencrypted text messages to communicate and organise...

There is always a price on freedom

To those who think the government are "reading" your e-mails.
74,000,000,000,000 e-mails where sent in 2015
To read every single e-mail you would need to read:
2,346,524 per second every second for 365 days of the year.
Take your tin foil hats off.
We need servers to scan e-mails in real time for key words related to things such as paedophiles and terrorism. The world wasn't and still isn't ready for the internet age, we had millenia to develop social interaction and law.. We have had all of a few decades with internet.

Think you are completely missing what people worry about privacy wise.

Not really, i study cyber security and forensics at university.

People over-estimate "snooping"

It's used primarily for big data, analytics and marketing trends and in some instanced used for cyber vetting from a social/economic stand point.

People worry about identity theft primarily.. If they use authentication protocols on many web services whilst changing their passwords every 6-12 months they won't have anything to worry about..

The majority of issues are the result of social engineering due to idiotic information being made freely available by those who don't have a brain cell..

This is why I am all for a total ban on all unrecorded in-person interaction.

Total free for all, people meeting in the pub for a chat. Could be talking about anything

The internet is not real life.. Social dynamics have evolved along-side our biology for tens of thousands of years..

Social networking and the internet is decades old.. We don't know the correct way to approach security or freedom's yet.
