Hello everyone,

I currently have the galaxy s5.

I'm looking at getting a new phone in the next month, I've been looking at the galaxy s6 edge mostly as that fits my price range, is there any other options I should look at? as long as the price is similar to the galaxy s6 egde then I'll be happy to have a look. I'm just not the best when it comes to phones and different specs.

I know I definitely want an android phone and not an iphone.

any help is much appreciated :D

Thanks

I'll second Oneplus 3.

I've just moved from S6 to OP3, biggest improvements are battery life, OS and having dual sim.

looking for a sim free phone, had a quick look at it but don't know too much about it, would it be considered an upgrade from my current s5? got upto £350 to spend really, i know if i get an s6 it will most likely have to be a refurbished one.

Yes the op3 is an upgrade from a s5. There is also the honor 8 for £350 from 3. Apparantly it comes unlocked straight from Huawei's factory but if that's wrong you would have to get an unlock code from ebay for a few quid. What things are important to you in a phone? The s6 has pretty bad battery life from what I've heard.

Op3 pros: very powerful, lots of ram for multitasking, metal body, near stock android and so the phone will feel snappier then some heavier skinned versions, good ROM support if you're into rooting, loud headphone jack , fast finger scanner. The biggest con is the screen, Full HD and pentile on a 5.5" screen means it isn't the sharpest around.

The honor 8 pros: Better camera, sharper screen, battery should be a little better than the op3's, powerful cpu, fast finger scanner. Cons: Less powerful graphics so gaming is worse than on the op3 and the honor 8 is heavily skinned i.e. it isn't close to stock android but it's smooth with nova launcher installed (I have the Huawei p9 that's virtually the same phone apart from aesthetics), headphone jack isn't as loud as on the op3's so for driving large headphones the honor 8 isn't as good.

Grey areas: 5.5" screen on the op3, 5.2" screen on the honor 8. The op3 has 6gb's of ram but it hasn't been clear if it has better multi-tasking or not than the honor, with 4GB's, because one plus had concerns over battery life, so they limited its use when it was first launched but mb that has changed with an update? Speaker quality idk about that.

I think the op3 and honor 8 are the best new phones for the money out right now.

One big reason to go with the op3 over the honor 8 is the emui skin that's on the honor. It can be fiddly to use and annoying. It does have some extra features like a call blocker, it can automatically close the apps you select that run in the background to save battery, a firewall to stop apps that you don't trust from accessing the internet, but I would still prefer stock android . If the honor came with stock android I would reccommend it without any hesitation but IMO emui kinda sucks. Having said that, on my p9 I don't mind using it too much now I'm use to it and there is also a way to debloat it without having to root which I have used and it works. Both phones are more powerful than the Samsung S5.

thanks for your help, i'm after something a little more powerful and quicker than my s5, something with a nice clear screen, reasonable camera and battery life similar to the s5 or better.

If screen, camera and battery life are most important then the honor 8 would be a good choice. It should be quite a bit faster than your s5 as well.

Is the huwaei p9 not a better shout than the honour though ? if you don't mind that version of android

The honour 8 was meant to be the mid range effort to the premium p9 wasn't it but off contract they have missed the pricing imo

The p9 has a slightly faster proccessor 2.5ghz vs 2.3ghz and for some reason you can't take monochrome pictures with the honor 8 even though it has the monochrome lense (apparantly it's because of the lack of leica branding). 7mm or 7.1mm thick for the p9 (idk which) vs 7.5mm thick for the honor 8. On the plus side for the honor 8 it has 4GB's of ram vs 3GB on the P9, an IR blaster, a more customizable finger scanner, better reported battery life (oddly) in benchmarks and from reviewers who have reviewed both phones.

I would say the P9 looks more elegant because it's metal with the glass area around the camera., but the all glass back of the honor 8 has 15 layers and reflects light and it looks pretty cool in direct sunlight .

The heavily skinned version of android that they both use uses more ram then stock and 4gb's instead of 3gb would be really nice and the better battery life would be great to have.

Honor is without doubt the value range of Huawei but specs wise the honor 8 wins over the p9 imo.

Hauwei also sponsered XDA developers to develope for the honor 8, but not much has come from that yet.

yes, the note 5 is an improvement over the s5, but I'm not sure if the battery life is better or worse. There is no note 6 as they skipped that name and went straight to the note 7.

None really, the X/XZ seems more expensive than they are worth. The last good Sony phone in my opinion was the Z5.

I would go with the OP3, there was an update a couple of months back which allows the phone to use more RAM. There was also another update which offers srgb mode for the screen for more accurate colours. The OP3 camera I say is one of the best you can get in a phone, OP does pretty well in this area.

EDIT: Saw your edit, the Z5 Premium does have a 4K screen but most of the time it acts as a 1080p screen. It is also older than the OP3 so may not continue receiving updates as long as it. The OP3 also uses the SD820 which is a more efficient processor compared to the Z5P's SD810. The OP3 also has double the RAM so will be better for multitasking.

And honestly, the camera on the Z5 phones didn't really impress me, even with 23 MP. The photos didn't seem that colour accurate and looked pretty grainy.
