Can I challenge this bill increase?

I've always been on the 'medium' tariff on Virgin (formerly NTL), which was £20/month in 2006. It has crept up year-on-year and is now £29.40. Now they want to slap on an extra £3. I didn't mind the odd 50p or £1 increases, but £3 is a 10% increase! Can they really do this?

What are you guys all paying? Bear in mind this is internet only, no TV or phone. So that's £32.40/month for internet only starting next month.

Yes, it even says in the letter if you're not happy you are free to cancel due to this this gets round the "no price increases above the RPI while in contract" rule.

When you call cancellations and tell them that's why you're leaving they'll then knock at least the £3 off your bill a month but if you push harder you'll probably end up getting more off.

I don't have the gift of the gab for haggling, so I'm probably just going to cancel it outright. I'm due a new phone contract next year anyway, so I'll contemplate a 30gb-odd data package (and a freebie expensive handset) and just be done with that.

£3 for a big tick from Netflix... Oh well there you go then - Bargain

Thought it was a taking the **** a bit tbh.. TiVo box is rubbish, still no sign of Atlantic but the BB is second to none.

Here's my monthly bill from TalkTalk

Free phone calls included + upgraded fibre

Shame that Talk Talk have the worst speeds and most problems of any ISP I have ever had to deal with and I deal with a lot in my job. I'd much rather spend a few extra quid and get continuity of service and excellent speeds.

Guess i'm lucky then, can't remember the last time my internet was down and i pay for up to 38mb and get this;

I called up to moan about the price increase and somehow they lowered my bill by a similar amount. So I've gone from 27 a month to 25 a month for some unknown reason, as I only re-contracted at the end of August.

I don't know about lucky but when a customer phones me for support and the internet is slow or dropping out, 9 times of ten it's Talk Talk.

Perhaps they just have a very large customer base?

Here is mine:

You challenge it by threatening to leave them. They will offer you a better deal than you had before to tie you in to a new contract.

I'd use this as an opportunity to shop around for new deals and take advantage of new customer promotions.

I got the same letter, only mine is going up by £3.50. I think my contract is actually due to run out at the time of the increase, so I have double reason to complain.

My partner hates virgin tivo and wants sky back but I can't bring my self to sacrifice the 150Mb fibre :P. I shall have to haggle.

You hardly even need to haggle. Say you want to cancel if they can't offer you a better deal. They will probably offer you a better deal.

You don't need the "gift of the gab". It's your money and your decision if you think the service isn't worth what you're paying.

I don't like haggling and every time I have called up to cancel I've been offered a discount without even asking. Been a broadband customer for 15 odd years and last year ditched the BT landline and moved to VM. Didn't make sense to pay line rental when VM already include it in the BB cost. At the same time VM applied a huge discount so almost getting the line rental free.

So take a Sky TV and keep the broadband? Best of both worlds?

I always phone up to cancel at the end of every yearly contract and always get a good deal. Don't ever continue once your contracts is up.

Every year, another £3 extra for no reason.

It's at twice year now. Not too bothered though as a few minutes on the phone cancels it out every time. It's not like anyone else offers the speed they do outside of small pockets so kinda stuck with them.

What did you say to them? I called and the guy said I was already getting a better price then what he can offer (£33.25 for 150Mb Broadband only, increasing to £36.24).
