Ki Edit - I have a 7850 not 4850!

Hi All,

Had my setup for 3 years now and looking for a little refresh, mainly the GPU so I can play BF1 and maybe some other new games due out.

I plan on keeping my setup for at least another 2 years so just need to see this out now.

Budget is around £170 but can push to £200 if needed as the 7850 will be worth around £35 ish?

Looking at options second hand I can easily get a 980 it seems, and new at £200 gets me into a new 4GB 480.

I currently play BF4 at high settings and would like to think I could play newer games at similar or maybe Ultra.

I don't want this to turn into a bashing thread, but out of the 2 which would give me the best bang for buck for the next 2 years?

Thanks

You will struggle to get £35 for a 4850 - despite having a reasonable level of grunt, they are too old to be useful (drivers stopped a few years ago).#

Edit - just seen your sig, do you mean 7850? in which case £35 is certainly reasonable.

Personally I would go for the RX480 - it's new vs old, so going to have (longer) warranty. AMD's drivers tend to improve over time, so likely to still have decent performance for a few more years, and in newer games.

Sorry yes 7850! Will edit now.

The budget I guess will only get me 4gb of the 480 but I guess would still be a massive bump over the 7850?

GTX 980 used for me as it's slightly better but then again old so driver support is going to be limited. I think it comes down to which one you can get cheapest but as you seem to keep your hardware for a long time RX 480 driver improvements that last longer than green team might make it worth it.

4gb will be ok do you think?

At 1080p sure the minimum I'd want is 3GB though.

Great, thanks for the input.

Like I say would be looking at a complete overhaul in around 2 years time with new monitors etc etc but for now just really want to be able to play BF1 nicely.

I had a 980 and it was a great card. Only got the 980Ti as I was helped out to get it. Still would recommend a new 480 if you're looking to keep it a while.

Appreciate the feedback.

Just been reading up and is there any proof in that the 470 can be overclocked to perform at similar levels of a 480? Just thinking of this is the case my be tempted by the 470 to help reduce costs.

@GinG

I have the Sapphire RX 480 Nitro 4GB, played BF1 Beta and with all settings maxed out i was getting 90-100fps average and VRAM usage stuck around 3400MB.. that was both DX11 and DX12.

Hope that helps :)

Based on how the 980's likely to start falling behind going forward it's a no brainer for me, 480 or 1060 all the way.

Appreciate the feedback.

I wouldn't put any trust in that.

Just what I wanted to hear, thanks very much!

Sounds like it will do me perfectly for the next couple of years, add a slight overclock and constant driver improvements seems I would be stupid not to.

Just looking about there is quite a few options to go for, which is the best one to get for a 4gb 480?
The quietest one is MSI's Gaming X, but it's also one of the more expensive cards. Avoid the Gigabyte G1 Gaming and XFX RS Edition models, as they're both crap.

I think the Red Dragon is a new model that hasn't been released yet. There wasn't a 4GB Red Devil with the larger cooler. The Nitro is okay, but a bit loud. No idea about the Asus Dual.

Apparently the mosfets used on the Gigabyte cards are utter garbage. I went for the sapphire 4gb 480 and its a fantastic card. i only game at 1080p so paying the extra £50 for the 8gb version just wasnt worth it.
