EVGA 1070 FTW or 1080 FTW

Hi

So I recently got an EVGA 1070 FTW. Its a nice card and I can play games like The Division and GTA 5 at 4K with reasonable graphic details and FPS around 40fps.

I am having serious considerations though swapping it for the EVGA 1080 FTW as now I have had a taste of 4K gaming, I would like to future proof as much as possible.

My quandry is how much of a boost there is between these 2 cards. Is it worth the extra 250 quid?

Anyone have any advice?

About 15%-20% faster depending on game but you ask is it worth £250 more .. no. I would buy a second 1070 and sli for 4k, that's where the smart money would go for 4k 2x 1070's.

In terms of price/performance it's most definetly not worth it, as you're only gaining around 20% extra performance for >50% more money. I wouldn't say the 1080 is a futureproof 4K card either. The Titan X (Pascal) might just sneak into that definition, along with the potential 1080 Ti, but even that isn't maxing out all of today's games at 4K, even if it can provide a very playable experience with some slightly lowered settings.

For those interested, I decided to go ahead and buy the 1080.

I have managed to gain a few extra FPS in The Division and in GTA 5 I was able to crank up the detail a little more and maintain 40-50 FPS.

I do actually agree that when you look at it from bang-per-buck, the extra £250 is maybe not worth the extra ~20% performance boost.

However... what was bugging me was the thought that I had already spent £420 on a 1070. I had visions of in say 6 or 12 months coming to play a game and being disappointed with the performance and wishing I had gone for the 1080. I couldn't shake that feeling of 'You buy cheap you buy twice'; and while £420 was not cheap, I felt it would be better to outlay the extra for the 1080 now rather than being in a position where I would want to sell the 1070 for a 1080 further down the line and end up losing money.

Anyway, in short - yes I know the gain for the extra money maybe is a little steep - but knowing I have the best card available at the moment is nice :)

Pascal Titan is the best card available.

SLI 1070 would blow the 1080 out of the water for 4k but enjoy the card anyway :)

Problem with SLI and Crossfire is that it adds input latency to the game. It's not much but can be annoying sometimes.

So now you'll be able to sit there and be disappointed you never bought the Titan Pascal instead :)

I didn't get a 1080 as I found paying an extra £200 for the same type of model that got me an extra 20% performance wasn't worth it.

Find out if it can run GOW4 @1080p too in a minute.:D

Probably not.....

If you turn textures down sure, tbh I feel 2GB cards aged well because at the end of the day you can't really use more without extra core strength.

That's no longer true since the dev's have taken to using high res textures to make the console games prettier.

It's not a big deal though it just requires a few tweaks to reduce the ram usage.
