BTW, while you're here and noticing your 'location', I'm off to NY again next year but it's the first time I'll have been with a decent camera - any suggestions on lenses to take? My inclination is to cover all the bases with 16-35 & 24-70 but I'm guessing you'd say take one prime and be done with it?

I took the 35mm and I didn't feel like I missed other focal length. I had a 45mm TSE in the bag too but I didn't take that out at all. These are the perspectives that you'd get with a 35mm.

Out of interest, is the first one from the Top of the Rock? How did you manage to smuggle a tripod up there?

It was a gorilla pod, was in my man bag and I tied that to the railings. Surprised it was steady enough as it was windy up there.

Ah ok, didn't know there were railings on the Rock, only ever seen the glass panels when I've been up there before but that was a while ago.

There are 2 levels, higher level have railings but recessed so if you fall, you fall into the glass panel level.

Ah ok, don't think I've ever been up to the higher level in that case.

I've read that you can't get anything up the Empire State, not even Gorillapods, but that it's a bit easier at the Rock.

I have been up Empire State (the Black and one photo was taken up there) but the view isn't that great anyway because you are standing at the most iconic building already.

That's true. I've been up both the Rock and Empire State (and WTC), just never tried taking camera gear up there.
