Pascal Titan X or Crossfire Maxwell Titan X

Hi guys,

I bought a Maxwell Titan X back in February for £800.00

We now of course have the Pascal Titan X for £1000.00 which is supposed to be around 60% more powerful.

I have recently bought this Monitor so I can make the move towards 4K gaming.

In BF4 I get around 90 FPS in 4K but in BF1 with Max everything settings I get between 43 and 56 FPS.

This is not the end of the world but I worry it will put me at a disadvantage in game.

If I buy the Pascal Titan X that should give me a 4K FPS in BF1 of around 85.

With that in mind I have some questions :D

1) Will this low fps put me at a disadvantage?

2) Would I be better to buy another Maxwell Titan X and put them in crossfire or Sell the Maxwell and buy a Pascal Titan X. (I am looking for a higher FPS)

3) If I have the Maxwell in crossfire will that effectively give me 24Gig of usable DRAM?

Thanks guys.

Martyn

1) A slight disadvantage, but if you want the absolute edge to roll with the pros then just turn all the detail to minimum. Only you can decide if the game is playable and if you need every option cranked to the max. Gsync will smooth out your gameplay even with sub 60fps.

2) Nvidia use SLI not crossfire (that's AMDs name for multi GPU). Personally multi GPU is an mess right now. If you must upgrade I'd go to a Pascal TX - however if you want to chase the cutting edge be aware you're getting mugged left right and centre. You're better not chasing the bleeding edge, nudge the detail down and just enjoying your games unless you have oodles of cash.

3) No, SLI doesn't double your RAM. As far as I know both cards have the same data so you still have the original 12GB limit.

Hi Minstadave,

Thanks for that. Kicking myself over the SLI / Crossfire thing, I knew that was just having a blonde moment :)

I am a bit of a graphics freak so turning down detail hurts me a little especially as that is one of the reasons I went to 4K.

I am not made of money however so I may need to just bite the bullet until the price comes down a bit :)

Thanks again for your help and fast response to all my questions.

Regards

I'd go with a single Pascal Titan X given the chance, SLi can be a pain in the arse tbh!! When it works well it's great, but I'd go with the v powerful single card :)

As above single card far outweighs the dual.

Games out in a few days, try it first before you open the cash floodgates.

Or, test it out now if you sign up to EA Access(free for first month) I believe you can advance play it for 10 hours(then cancel EA Access).

Lesser settings is an advantage in mp btw, all the bells n whistles turned on leaves you at a disadvantage.

I usually play on max settings but AA instead of MSAA, but no doubt I could reduce more and still be crap anyway.:D

Single most powerful option every time without fail, I haven't considered SLI/Crossfire to be an options for years. There's nothing worse than an expensive GPU paper weight.

Lets pretend you manage to find a game where SLI work's, yes ok you'll get higher FPS number in the top corner of your screen but that'll be all, you won't be having a smooth experience like you would with one card. Fact. Plus Gsync will take care of smoothing any frames out down to around 40fps on that monitor, which the TXP is more than capable of pulling more than that.

Pascal Titan X without a doubt, but if you can wait I'd hold out for the GTX 1080 Ti. Pascal Titan X is just an absolute monster.

Why don't you wait until the game is released and then ask people for frame rate details for the two set ups that you're considering?

It sounds like you're specifically upgrading for this game in particular, so why rule SLI out? Battlefield games have great SLI support, as do many others.

What do you understand the term 'max everything' settings to be then?

A mix of low and medium?

Where does he say he was running BF4 in max everything? He only said what he was running BF1 in................................

Are you sure you get 90fps in 4K with a maxwell Titan? If so then I'd stick to that as other Titans manage 45fps

Hi Brazo, you have just got me doubting myself with this and I have gone into BF4 and had a second look.

Recently whilst we have been waiting for BF1's release my clan mates and I have just been playing on a TDM server and I was seeing FPS of about 70 to 87.

It was more of a casual observation whislt gaming that I recalled from memory and rounded up.

Anyway, as you can see from this quick recording I have made you are quite right.

I had "antialiasing deferred" turned off and "antialiasing post" set to "Low".

On a 4K monitor and my previous 1080P monitor (1080P I had DSR switched on) I couldn't see the difference when these were on full so turned them down for better FPS.

You can see the settings here on the 4K monitor for anyone that is interested.

Thanks again to everyone for your advice on this and just as an update I found this YT video on how to overclock a Titan X:

and it has solved the problem in the short term untill I can afford a Pascal Titan X :)

I am now getting between 59 FPS and 70 FPS with all BF1 settings to maximum.

I've been playing for around 2 hours with the final settings and it is smooth as butter :D

Thanks again guys for your help and sorry for any confusion I caused with my OP.
