UK Government Admits to Spying on Citizens, Finally Makes It Legal

In a highly significant judgment released today, The Investigatory Powers Tribunal has found that the UK’s intelligence agencies were secretly and illegally collecting bulk data on people in the UK without adequate safeguards or supervision for over a decade. This is one of the most significant indictments of the secret use of the Government’s mass surveillance powers since Edward Snowden first began exposing the extent of US and UK spying in 2013.

The good news is that last November — years after the initial Snowden disclosures and months after the Privacy International lawsuit was filed — the GCHQ’s bulk collection program was changed to include more disclosure on the underlying policies, rendering it legal without affecting the underlying operations. As a result, nothing has to change, and it’s unlikely that anyone involved in the program will face repercussions of any kind.

I think it's great news that this is now finally made Legal. If you are not doing anything shady, you got nothing to hide.

This program has and will continue to save thousand's of lives from terrorists attacks. I hope soon the day comes when everyone will be mandated to provide their fingerprints and DNA to the government. This will make it next to impossible to step out of bounds of law and remain unpunished.

Legalization of collecting data is definitely a step in the right direction to a much more safer society.

This must be a parody account. Hows it working so far?

Troll or no troll, the beast must be fed.
Let me play Devil's advocate.

Why should people surrender their fingerprints and DNA to anybody? What right does the Government have in collecting my personal data in such a way? I was born in the UK, but at no point in my entire life was I ever asked if I subscribed to the laws and regulations of this land; which, by the way, are all a social construct which we're all forced into accepting as the norm.

Thats kinda how laws work. You don't just leave people out believe they don't believe it them :D.

Your point perfectly sums up my point. 'Law' is a social construct, so telling me 'that's kinda how laws work' is as useless as writing 'cucumber sandwiches are nice' against my argument.

It is but I'm unsure how it's a bad thing. It completely defeats the point of laws if you can decided whether or not to follow them.

But they are nice :(.

Edit: Unless I'm misunderstanding you and you're not using "social construct" to describe something you don't like .

Ignoring all the troll comments in this thread so far.

Generally speaking, it is a common opinion on this forum that gun control in USA will lead to less shootings and violence and this makes total sense.

Do you disagree with the notion that if government is to collect and analyze data, hold DNA + Fingerprints database that this would cause the crime to drop dramatically?

Ultimately this would lead to a Safer society as a whole, just like not having gun's in open access.

If my goal is to live in a safe society in which crime levels are reduced by all means, how is the following proposition "trolling" or being ignorant? Why saying that in USA guns should be controlled for the safety of whole population seems like a great idea and is widely supported, while the proposition to hold databases on citizens which would make committing crime extremely difficult is seen as a total troll attempt?

Calling you out isn't a "troll comment".

No it won't think it through if you remove guns you remove the implement that allows gun violence. Thus reducing/ending gun violence.

If you take fingerprints/DNA you don't remove the ability to commit the crime.

So it's feeble to suggest someone at GCHQ has a file on me and my porno graphic obsession with...toe jam.

Oh deary me.
