Too many magistrates in England and Wales are "old and white"

It's not about victimhood, but all people should be equally held accountable for the things they say.

People seem to make it into victimhood, like the first reply in this thread.

Fact is, the reason why there are mainly white and old magistrates is the same reason why older white men occupy high positions in certain lucrative industries and occupy the large portion of the board in large firms. These are all positions that require training, experience and a proven background (often decades of proof for other jobs). So if we turn back time by decades to when these people were being educated and were young, we will find that society and happenstance generally was biased towards the white man and did favour that demographic if slightly in some ways. Women were encouraged to do 'women's jobs' and male members of non working class families were sent to higher education. These families were largely white, as positions of power held by their parents were almost entirely held by white men decades prior to that, when times were not just a little racist but far more open in its discrimination towards other races.

Let us also not forget the ratio of white people to minorities back then were higher and that will still effect us now, as it is those experienced people that end up in the higher positions that people moan they dont have now because of xxx or yyy.

These articles are often written with the intent to shock readers and i pay no mind to them. The young people of the multicultural society we live in today will eventually gain the experience to reach these positions. If 20 or 30 years down the line the positions were still 89% white men, then i would raise the questions why but filling in the tick boxes for the sake of 'quality' is stupid.

Most of our engineers are old, white men - Plenty of young, female and ethnic people graduating with engineering degrees out there, but they're mostly going into Project Management.
We're failing our targets because nobody wants the job!

As all threads that now have even a whiff of race are closed, goodbye thread.

It's 53% Women so not Men.

Whites are 87% of the country, so why is 89% of one profession an issue? Should every profession represent the country's ethnicity down to the percentage point?

What about age? 87% of the country isn't old white people.

All the senior managers at my bank are old, funny how that works, it's almost as if one requires decades of job experience to get high paid senior roles. Why aren't 18 year olds in the Army Sargent-Majors?!

Worth remembering that Magistrates decide guilt without use of a jury. In law, we are supposed to be judged of our guilt by our peers, so it seems sensible that Magistrates are reflective of the makeup of society.

Is 89% white a problem? It's broadly representative of UK demographic, so possibly not. 86% old might be more of an issue.

My comment to women was more about higher positions of power in general and was referring to the standard complaint of 'So few board members are women!' in certain industries (rail and such).

Also if you read my post, i am not complaining that there are mostly white men but rather making a big deal out of it either way is stupid in today's society because the unbalance of race, gender in most cases is nothing to do with discrimination due to gender or race.

Are you just so set on disagreeing with me these days that you look for a point to contest when i post, even if my post does not disagree with yours?

In fact, your last post pretty much matches one of the points in my last post.

A magistrate deals with cases that are too mundane or trivial for a proper judge. It's not a senior position.

Ok so anyone can be a Magistrate, it's infact a voluntary job that just requires you to give up your free time. It's obvious that you aren't going to get a lot of young people giving up their free time to do it given that for the training you need to give up your evenings and weekends. Is there any bias in who gets picked? Are we turning away swathes of 20 year olds, or is it just more 50 year olds want to do it?

I don't think there's a suggestion of bias in the selection, or that selection bias is a problem for wannabe magistrates - rather that the bias in the make-up of the field is potentially a problem when it comes to justice.
