New Family Car - Spec Me

My wife had a mk3 focus until recently and with our pushchair (Britax B-Smart) we found that the boot wasn't particularly great. Once we had the pushchair in there we couldn't really fit much else. I wouldn't recommend one as a family car, not with young children anyway. I bought a Mondeo (mk4.5) and the boot in that is plenty big enough.

we bought a cmax for the arrival of our first and its been great. good inside space. great boot space and low running costs.

we bought the 1.6 diesel model but it comes in all flavours.

I would much rather have the C-Max as a family motor than a Focus. Bigger is better as often once a pram is involved, there is no room left in the boot. Sure, most cars will take the pram, but usually with little room left for other things. Our 3 series touring was like that. Only when we went to the 5 series did we feel we had properly usable extra boot space.

Better to go as big as you feel comfortable with in all honesty.

The problematic 1.4 TSI was the one with both a Supercharger and Turbocharger (akak Twincharged), which was available in several different power outputs, but mainly 140bhp in Golf, 160bhp in Golf, and 180bhp in Polo GTI iirc)

The 123bhp version used by Audi and Seat, only uses a Turbocharger, and as such is far more reliable than the more complicated twincharged version

Thank you, il bear that in mind..think the 1.4 in the Leon is like gold dust from a quick autotrader search

Liking the idea of the A3 more and more....would be around a 2010-2011.

I myself have a Civic though, but thats my daily drive...so i guess we could use this for the next 5 years for holidays....but then im looking to upgrade mine in the next few years...to perhaps a tourer A3/4 or a 3 series

I just would rather go the route that the missus has the child friendly car and i have a toy haha

Trouble is we plan to have another in a few years time so perhaps a Qashqai would be best....although i understand peoples opinions on the boot not really being that much bigger...but then the conveniece is obvious with it being higher up (just slightly)

I had a 2010 A3 sportback and it was brilliant. Moved from a fiesta and was like a breath of fresh air. Plenty of room for the buggy and a weeks shop. You get super comfy seats, great interior and bose speakers. Put the seats down and its a mini van. My only regret was I had the 1.6ltr and not the much better 1.4 turbo but back when I got it the 1.4s were just out and cost more. I have driven the 122hp 1.4 as a courtesy car and even they are quite punchy. If I had the 140 1.4 engine and didn't have services, tax coming up and no warranty I wouldn't have sold it.

Youre selling it well to me :-)

So again revisiting this...we should be looking to have the funds and buying around Xmas...is this a good time to buy?
Budget realistically will be £7.5k (Corsa i think we can get £750 for)

Im thinking we should steer away from the Super/Turbo charged 1.4 TSI Golf, Leon etc. But if we do go for 1.4 TSI the turbo charged...has anyone had first hand experience of these?

Anyone have an Audi A3 1.4 TSFI? anything to look out for?

Audi 1.4 tsfi is another option.

Focus mk3 - Ecoboost if we can...but again i have reservations on the boot space.

So the list is pretty much the same:

A3 - 1.4 tsfi
mk3 Focus Ecoboost
Golf/Leon 1.4 tsi but turbocharged
Quashqai
Ceed

I think in the next 5 years we will be holidaying in the UK, so enough room for all those bags and kid supplies is the key.

So i think economical petrol is the key.
